Overview

What the Northeast Winter Family Snow Route is

Nine days built for children in real cold. Short outdoor blocks of twenty minutes, heated handoffs between every stop, ice parks after dark and halal hotpot every night. Winter coats and boots are arranged before you land.

This is a private departure, not a shared coach. You choose the dates, we rebuild the 9 days around them: Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang, Dalian, in that order, with the halal restaurants and the mosques placed first and the sightseeing fitted around them.

The halal guarantee on this route: every restaurant is a certified halal restaurant with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. We send the full list with addresses before you fly, and your guide re-checks each booking the day before you eat there. Shenyang is easy: the South Mosque is central and active with a whole halal district around it. Harbin has the Daowai mosque and we plan around it. In the extreme cold, we shorten the time between prayer stops and keep the vehicle available as a warm space with a prayer mat. Changbaishan has limited Muslim facilities, so we confirm a prayer room at your hotel before you arrive.

Cities

Every city this route passes through

Each one with what you actually see there, what you eat, where you pray and how you arrive.

Harbin (Heilongjiang)

1 full day · Late December to February for the ice festival; June to August for a cool summer escape.

The ice capital: Russian-influenced architecture, the world's largest ice festival, and a Hui community whose halal restaurants are the best thing about eating here in winter.

Ice and Snow World — Full-scale buildings carved from ice blocks out of the Songhua river, lit from inside, open from late December to late February. Go after dark and dress for minus twenty-five.
Central Street and St Sophia — A kilometre of cobbled pedestrian street with a Russian Orthodox church at one end and old merchant houses along it.
Sun Island snow sculpture park — Daytime counterpart to the ice park, with enormous snow carvings and a lot less queuing.
Halal hotpot is genuinely the reason to eat in Harbin in winter: Muslim-run broths, hand-sliced mutton and skewers, plus Hui beef buns and a Russian-influenced halal bakery tradition.
Harbin mosque — A central historic mosque with a green dome, active and easy to reach. Wudhu inside, and warm, which matters in January.
Harbin Taiping (HRB) airport, high-speed rail from Beijing in about five hours.

Changchun (Jilin)

1 full day · June to September, or December to February for the ski hill.

A planned city of wide boulevards and parks, capital of Jilin, with Manchurian and Korean food cultures and a Hui community well established since the railway arrived.

Puppet Manchukuo palace — The palace and offices of the 1930s Manchukuo state, preserved as a museum and a sober, well-documented hour.
Changchun Nanhu and the film studio — A big lake park, plus the oldest film studio in China, which has a working studio tour.
Jingyuetan — A reservoir and forest park on the eastern edge, with cycling and a lakeshore walk; the ski hill opens in winter.
Hui halal restaurants across the city: mutton hotpot, beef buns, skewers, and a Korean-influenced halal barbecue. The Hui quarter near the old mosque is the reliable area.
Changchun mosque — Central, active, with wudhu. Jumuah is straightforward.
Changchun Longjia (CGQ) airport, high-speed rail from Harbin in about an hour.

Shenyang (Liaoning)

1 full day · April to October. Winters are very cold but the palace is at its most atmospheric under snow.

The old Manchu capital, with an imperial palace predating Beijing's Forbidden City and a substantial Hui community in the streets around the South Mosque.

Shenyang Imperial Palace — Built in 1625 by the Manchu before they took Beijing: a smaller, harder-edged palace with a very different feel from the Ming one.
Shenyang South Mosque — A large, historic Hui mosque with a long courtyard, and the anchor of the surrounding halal food streets.
Zhaoling tomb and Beiling park — The tomb of the first Qing emperor in a huge park of old pines, worth the walk for the spirit path alone.
Northeast Hui cooking: halal mutton hotpot, beef buns, grilled skewers, and a very good halal cold noodle in summer. The streets around the South Mosque are lined with halal kitchens.
Shenyang South Mosque — Large, historic, central and very active. Wudhu on site.
Shenyang Taoxian (SHE) airport, high-speed rail from Beijing in about two and a half hours.

Dalian (Liaoning)

1 full day · May to October. July and August are the swimming months and the city is at its best.

A port city on the Yellow Sea with hills, trams, Russian and Japanese architecture and a genuinely good coastline. The mildest city in the northeast and the best seafood.

Xinghai Square and the coast road — A huge seafront square and a coastal road with cliffs, beaches and a bridge out over the water.
Dalian old trams and Russian street — The 1930s tram cars still run, and the old Russian quarter is walkable in an hour.
Bangchuidao and Laohutan — Two of the better beaches inside the city, with an aquarium and a coastal path.
Muslim-run seafood restaurants serving fish, prawns and shellfish with no alcohol on the premises, plus Hui beef and mutton kitchens inland. We pre-check every seafood booking.
Dalian mosque — Active and central, with wudhu. Jumuah is straightforward.
Dalian Zhoushuizi (DLC) airport, high-speed rail from Shenyang in about two hours.
Day by day

How the 9 days actually run

A working skeleton, not a fixed package. We rebuild it around your dates, your prayer needs and whoever is travelling with you.

1

Arrive in Harbin

Harbin Taiping (HRB) airport, high-speed rail from Beijing in about five hours. Your Muslim guide meets you at the gate with your name on a board. First stop is a hotel we have placed within walking distance of Harbin mosque, so Maghrib is a short walk rather than a negotiation. Dinner is already booked at a halal kitchen we have audited.

2

Harbin — Ice and Snow World

Full-scale buildings carved from ice blocks out of the Songhua river, lit from inside, open from late December to late February. Go after dark and dress for minus twenty-five.

3

Harbin to Changchun

Leave after Dhuhr and drive out. Changchun Longjia (CGQ) airport, high-speed rail from Harbin in about an hour. Your guide breaks the drive for salah and for food rather than at a service station of his choosing. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Changchun mosque.

4

Changchun — Puppet Manchukuo palace

The palace and offices of the 1930s Manchukuo state, preserved as a museum and a sober, well-documented hour.

5

Changchun to Shenyang

Set off mid-morning, once the light is good. Shenyang Taoxian (SHE) airport, high-speed rail from Beijing in about two and a half hours. We stop for salah, and lunch is a halal kitchen we have booked on the route rather than whatever is nearest the motorway. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Shenyang South Mosque.

6

Shenyang — Shenyang Imperial Palace

Built in 1625 by the Manchu before they took Beijing: a smaller, harder-edged palace with a very different feel from the Ming one.

7

Shenyang to Dalian

Depart after a late breakfast and a short walk. Dalian Zhoushuizi (DLC) airport, high-speed rail from Shenyang in about two hours. The drive is broken twice: once for prayer, once for a proper halal meal, with water and a prayer mat in the vehicle. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Dalian mosque.

8

Dalian — Xinghai Square and the coast road

A huge seafront square and a coastal road with cliffs, beaches and a bridge out over the water.

9

Depart from Dalian

A last halal breakfast, then the transfer out. Dalian Zhoushuizi (DLC) airport, high-speed rail from Shenyang in about two hours. We hold the vehicle until your flight is called, and if you are fasting we send a breakfast box the night before.

Every day is salah-first. Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang, Dalian each have mosques we have used before; on the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time rather than at a service station of his choosing.

What you eat, city by city

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and no kitchen that handles both. This is the part we audit in person.

Changchun

Hui halal restaurants across the city: mutton hotpot, beef buns, skewers, and a Korean-influenced halal barbecue. The Hui quarter near the old mosque is the reliable area. Changchun mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Fasting? Tell us and we run the route in Ramadan: suhoor boxes delivered before Fajr, slow afternoons, and iftar confirmed at a halal restaurant every single night.
Prayer

Where you pray on this route

Not a list of every mosque in the province — the ones we actually build into this itinerary, with wudhu and women’s space confirmed.

Harbin mosque

Harbin

A central historic mosque with a green dome, active and easy to reach. Wudhu inside, and warm, which matters in January.

The real issue in winter is cold, not access. We keep outdoor blocks to twenty minutes, hand off warm vehicles at each stop, and plan prayer in the mosque or in a heated mall room.

Changchun mosque

Changchun

Central, active, with wudhu. Jumuah is straightforward.

A central mosque and short city drives make this easy. On the winter legs we keep handoffs warm and brief.

Shenyang South Mosque

Shenyang

Large, historic, central and very active. Wudhu on site.

One of the easiest cities in the northeast for salah, with a major historic mosque and a Hui quarter around it.

Dalian mosque

Dalian

Active and central, with wudhu. Jumuah is straightforward.

A central mosque and short city drives. Coastal days are planned so you are back in the city for Maghrib.

On the road: your guide carries a prayer mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet calculated for your exact dates, and stops the vehicle rather than the prayer.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask us every week

It is private. There is no seat-in-coach departure and no joining other travellers — the vehicle, the guide and the 9 days belong to your party alone. You pick the start date and we build around it. That is also why the halal logistics work: a kitchen booking for four people is a conversation, not a contract.
Every restaurant on this route is a certified halal kitchen with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. In Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang, Dalian we use: Halal hotpot is genuinely the reason to eat in Harbin in winter: Muslim-run broths, hand-sliced mutton and skewers, plus Hui beef buns and a Russian-influenced halal bakery tradition; Hui halal restaurants across the city: mutton hotpot, beef buns, skewers, and a Korean-influenced halal barbecue; Northeast Hui cooking: halal mutton hotpot, beef buns, grilled skewers, and a very good halal cold noodle in summer; Muslim-run seafood restaurants serving fish, prawns and shellfish with no alcohol on the premises, plus Hui beef and mutton kitchens inland. You receive the complete list with street addresses before you fly, and your guide re-confirms each booking the day before you eat there.

Yes, and we do it often. Suhoor boxes are delivered to your hotel before Fajr, afternoons are kept slow, iftar is confirmed at a certified halal restaurant every night, and we find you a mosque for Taraweeh wherever you happen to be. If you want to spend the last ten nights or Eid in one city, tell us and we will re-cut the route around it.
