The eight cities we run every single season

City + province, the mosque you will pray in, the halal dish you should not miss and the months that suit it best.

Xi'an

Shaanxi

The easiest city in China for a Muslim traveller. The Muslim Quarter sits inside the Ming city walls and the Great Mosque of Xi'an has served the community since the Tang dynasty.

Great Mosque of Xi'an, Huajue Lane: Prayer five times daily, women's section, wudu facilities
Signature halal dish: Xi'an beef paomo, lamb skewers, biangbiang noodles
Best season: March–May and September–November

Yinchuan

Ningxia

Capital of the Hui Muslim autonomous region. Arabic signage, halal butchers on every block and Nanguan Grand Mosque glowing white at the edge of the old city.

Nanguan Grand Mosque: Daily prayers, Islamic architecture, community iftar in Ramadan
Signature halal dish: Hand-pulled lamb noodles, Hui eight-treasure tea
Best season: May–October, desert light at its best

Xining

Qinghai

Our home base and the gateway to the Tibetan plateau. Dongguan Grand Mosque anchors the city centre, and Qinghai Lake is two hours away.

Dongguan Grand Mosque: One of the largest prayer halls in northwest China
Signature halal dish: Qinghai lamb skewers, yak yoghurt, hand-grabbed mutton
Best season: June–September for Qinghai Lake; April–May for spring light

Lanzhou

Gansu

The birthplace of halal Lanzhou beef noodles, served from 5am on a Yellow River bend and the classic start of any Silk Road journey.

Xiguan Mosque and Lanzhou mosque quarter: Prayer before the noodle houses open
Signature halal dish: Lanzhou lamian, clear-broth beef noodles, lamb offal soup
Best season: May–October

Nanjing

Jiangsu

A 600-year-old Hui quarter beside the Ming city wall, with Jingjue Mosque at its heart and some of the gentlest, greenest walking in eastern China.

Jingjue Mosque: Ming-dynasty courtyard mosque, still fully active
Signature halal dish: Nanjing salted duck (halal certified), Hui beef pot
Best season: March–May for plum blossom, October–November for plane trees

Chengdu

Sichuan

Giant pandas, the Leshan Giant Buddha and a compact Hui halal scene around Huangcheng Mosque — proof that even spicy Sichuan can be fully halal.

Huangcheng Mosque: Central, easy to reach from every hotel zone
Signature halal dish: Halal hotpot, Hui beef hotpot, sesame lamb
Best season: March–June and September–November

Beijing

Niujie Mosque is over a thousand years old and the surrounding Hui district feeds you properly before the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the hutongs.

Signature halal dish: Halal Peking duck, lamb hotpot, Niujie beef buns
Best season: April–May and September–October

Seasonality

What each season looks like for a Muslim traveller

Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year, so we rebuild the daily schedule — not just the sightseeing list — whenever it overlaps your dates.

Spring · March–May

Best all-round choice. Nanjing plum blossom, Xining highland light, Xi'an at 20°C. Ramadan often falls here — we plan around it.

Summer · June–August

Qinghai Lake and the Xinjiang grasslands are at their greenest. Expect 30°C+ in Beijing and Xi'an, so we front-load sightseeing early.

Autumn · September–November

The clearest skies and the most comfortable prayer pacing. Beijing and Xi'an are at their best in October.

Winter · December–February

Harbin ice city, quiet mosques and halal hotpot every night. Southern China stays mild; the north drops below zero.
