Dongguan Grand Mosque
The largest mosque in Qinghai, in the very centre of Xining, serving a mixed Hui and Salar community. Fully active with a well-kept women's section.
Xining is our home city and the capital of Qinghai. Dongguan Grand Mosque sits in the city centre, halal restaurants line every street around it, and Qinghai Lake — a great blue inland sea at 3,200 m — is two hours away.
Xining is where HalalTravelChina is based, and it is the city we know best. It sits at about 2,200 m on the edge of the Tibetan plateau, which gives it a particular quality of light — hard, clean, and long in the evening — and makes it cool when the rest of China is baking.
Dongguan Grand Mosque, the largest in Qinghai, is right in the centre and holds tens of thousands of worshippers; on Jumu'ah the streets around it fill. Hui and Salar Muslims have lived here for centuries and the halal food reflects it: hand-grabbed mutton, thick sour yak yoghurt, eight-treasure tea. Two hours west is Qinghai Lake, one of the largest inland salt lakes on earth and, in our view, the most underrated landscape in China.
The gateway to Qinghai province and the Tibetan plateau, with domestic trunk routes and limited regional international services.

Highland and dry. Summers are cool and sunny — Xining barely needs air conditioning — while winters are cold and crisp. The sun is fierce at altitude and the temperature drops sharply after sunset in every month. Late April to late May gives light and bird migration without July crowds; June to September is warmest.
Send us your dates and who is travelling. A Muslim advisor replies within one hour during China working hours with a day-by-day halal itinerary for Xining — restaurants, mosques, prayer times, hotels and an itemised price.
