Shenyang is the anchor of China's northeast and the city from which the Qing dynasty came — the Manchus held their court here before taking Beijing. The Mukden Palace is the second-largest surviving imperial palace complex in China, and it is far quieter than the Forbidden City.
It also has the largest mosque in Northeast China. Shenyang South Mosque serves a Hui community concentrated in the old Xiaoxiguan quarter, and around it sits a dense cluster of halal restaurants. Northeastern halal cooking is hearty and beef-heavy — smoked and grilled meats, beef jerky, bread — which turns out to suit the climate perfectly.
