Overview

Why Nanjing works for Muslim travellers

Nanjing is one of the four great ancient capitals of China and the gentlest of them. It has the longest surviving city wall in the world, tree-lined avenues planted with French planes, and a calmer pace than either Beijing or Shanghai. It is also — quietly, without the fame of Xi'an — one of the genuinely comfortable Muslim-friendly cities in eastern China.

Jingjue Mosque dates from the Ming dynasty and is traditionally linked to Zheng He, the great Muslim admiral who led the Ming treasure fleets to the Indian Ocean. The Hui quarter around it, especially the old Qijiawan area, has been Muslim for six centuries. Nanjing's halal speciality is salted duck, done under halal rules, and it is excellent.

Halal Nanjing salted duck — The city's signature, and it exists halal. Salty, aromatic, thin-skinned — buy it whole from Hui shops in the old quarter.
Hui beef pot and beef offal soup — The everyday food of the Muslim quarter, served from early morning.
Muslim noodle houses near Jingjue Mosque — Hand-pulled lamian and beef noodle soup, a five-minute walk from the prayer hall.
Halal duck-blood soup adaptations — A Nanjing classic reworked by Muslim kitchens with beef stock.
Halal banquets for groups — Several Hui restaurants near the wall take group bookings with full set menus.
Halal note: kitchens and opening hours change. Your guide re-checks every restaurant the day before, and we always hold a backup table.

Sightseeing

What to see in Nanjing

The Ming City Wall

The longest surviving city wall in the world. The Zhonghua Gate segment is the most complete medieval gate complex anywhere.

Confucius Temple and Qinhuai River

The old lantern-lit entertainment quarter on the river — best at dusk.

Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum

Set in forest on the Purple Mountain, climbed by a long granite stairway.

Nanjing Museum

One of the best three museums in China, with a reconstructed 1930s street inside.

Memorial Hall for the Nanjing Massacre

Difficult and important; we warn guests in advance and never schedule it before Maghrib.

Linggu Temple and Purple Mountain

Shaded trails, tombs and a famous stone-arched hall.

Weather

When to go

Nanjing is one of China's famous furnace cities: July and August are brutally hot and humid. Spring (March–May) brings the plum blossom and comfortable 20°C days; October–November turns the plane trees gold and is arguably the best window. Winter is damp and cold with occasional snow.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask us every week

Yes, quietly so. Jingjue Mosque has served the community since the Ming dynasty, and the surrounding Hui quarter has been continuously Muslim for roughly six centuries. It receives far less attention than Xi'an but works very well.
Zheng He was a Muslim eunuch admiral from Yunnan who led the Ming treasure fleets across the Indian Ocean in the fifteenth century. Jingjue Mosque's founding is traditionally linked to him, and Nanjing was the base from which his fleet was built.
Halal Nanjing salted duck, available from Hui shops in the old quarter. Then Hui beef pot and hand-pulled noodles near the mosque.
Three or four. Nanjing rewards slow walking — the wall, the Purple Mountain and the museum are each half-day commitments.
July and August. Nanjing is one of China's three traditional furnace cities and the summer heat is genuinely punishing.
