Overview

What the Shenyang Imperial & the Yalu Border is

The old Manchu capital, whose imperial palace predates Beijing's, plus the Hui quarter around the South Mosque. Then east to Dandong for the bombed Yalu bridge and the easternmost section of the Great Wall.

This is a private departure, not a shared coach. You choose the dates, we rebuild the 5 days around them: Shenyang, Dandong, in that order, with the halal restaurants and the mosques placed first and the sightseeing fitted around them.

The halal guarantee on this route: every restaurant is a certified halal restaurant with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. We send the full list with addresses before you fly, and your guide re-checks each booking the day before you eat there. Shenyang is easy: the South Mosque is central and active with a whole halal district around it. Harbin has the Daowai mosque and we plan around it. In the extreme cold, we shorten the time between prayer stops and keep the vehicle available as a warm space with a prayer mat. Changbaishan has limited Muslim facilities, so we confirm a prayer room at your hotel before you arrive.

Every city this route passes through

Each one with what you actually see there, what you eat, where you pray and how you arrive.

Shenyang (Liaoning)

1 full day · April to October. Winters are very cold but the palace is at its most atmospheric under snow.

The old Manchu capital, with an imperial palace predating Beijing's Forbidden City and a substantial Hui community in the streets around the South Mosque.

Shenyang Imperial Palace — Built in 1625 by the Manchu before they took Beijing: a smaller, harder-edged palace with a very different feel from the Ming one.
Shenyang South Mosque — A large, historic Hui mosque with a long courtyard, and the anchor of the surrounding halal food streets.
Zhaoling tomb and Beiling park — The tomb of the first Qing emperor in a huge park of old pines, worth the walk for the spirit path alone.
Northeast Hui cooking: halal mutton hotpot, beef buns, grilled skewers, and a very good halal cold noodle in summer. The streets around the South Mosque are lined with halal kitchens.
Shenyang South Mosque — Large, historic, central and very active. Wudhu on site.
Shenyang Taoxian (SHE) airport, high-speed rail from Beijing in about two and a half hours.

Dandong (Liaoning)

1 full day · April to October. May and October are the most comfortable months.

The border city on the Yalu river, facing across to Korea, with the eastern end of the Great Wall in the hills behind it and a Hui community on the riverfront.

Yalu river broken bridge — The bombed span of the old Sino-Korean bridge, walkable to the broken end, with the other bank a few hundred metres away.
Hushan Great Wall — The easternmost surviving section of the Ming wall, rebuilt on a hill right on the border, forty minutes out of town.
Jinjiangshan park and the riverfront — A hill park over the city and a long riverside promenade with the best evening view across the water.
Hui halal restaurants on the riverfront: mutton skewers, beef buns, hotpot and a good cold noodle. Seafood here is river fish, prepared halal at Muslim-run kitchens.
Dandong mosque — Central and active. Prayer on the border day is planned in the city before you drive out to Hushan.
Dandong Langtou (DDG) airport, high-speed rail from Shenyang in about an hour.
Day by day

How the 5 days actually run

A working skeleton, not a fixed package. We rebuild it around your dates, your prayer needs and whoever is travelling with you.

1

Arrive in Shenyang

Shenyang Taoxian (SHE) airport, high-speed rail from Beijing in about two and a half hours. Your Muslim guide meets you at the gate with your name on a board. First stop is a hotel we have placed within walking distance of Shenyang South Mosque, so Maghrib is a short walk rather than a negotiation. Dinner is already booked at a halal kitchen we have audited.

2

Shenyang — Shenyang Imperial Palace

Built in 1625 by the Manchu before they took Beijing: a smaller, harder-edged palace with a very different feel from the Ming one.

3

Shenyang to Dandong

Leave after Dhuhr and drive out. Dandong Langtou (DDG) airport, high-speed rail from Shenyang in about an hour. Your guide breaks the drive for salah and for food rather than at a service station of his choosing. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Dandong mosque.

4

Dandong — Yalu river broken bridge

The bombed span of the old Sino-Korean bridge, walkable to the broken end, with the other bank a few hundred metres away.

5

Depart from Dandong

A last halal breakfast, then the transfer out. Dandong Langtou (DDG) airport, high-speed rail from Shenyang in about an hour. We hold the vehicle until your flight is called, and if you are fasting we send a breakfast box the night before.

Every day is salah-first. Shenyang, Dandong each have mosques we have used before; on the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time rather than at a service station of his choosing.

Shenyang South Mosque

A large, historic Hui mosque with a long courtyard, and the anchor of the surrounding halal food streets.

Yalu river broken bridge

The bombed span of the old Sino-Korean bridge, walkable to the broken end, with the other bank a few hundred metres away.

The easternmost surviving section of the Ming wall, rebuilt on a hill right on the border, forty minutes out of town.

Certified halal restaurants only, every single meal

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and the full list with addresses in your inbox before you fly.

Prayer planned into every day

Salah is placed first and sightseeing is built around it, not the other way round. Your guide carries a mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet.

Halal food

What you eat, city by city

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and no kitchen that handles both. This is the part we audit in person.

Shenyang

Northeast Hui cooking: halal mutton hotpot, beef buns, grilled skewers, and a very good halal cold noodle in summer. The streets around the South Mosque are lined with halal kitchens. Shenyang South Mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Dandong

Hui halal restaurants on the riverfront: mutton skewers, beef buns, hotpot and a good cold noodle. Seafood here is river fish, prepared halal at Muslim-run kitchens. Dandong mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Prayer

Where you pray on this route

Not a list of every mosque in the province — the ones we actually build into this itinerary, with wudhu and women’s space confirmed.

Shenyang South Mosque

Shenyang

Large, historic, central and very active. Wudhu on site.

One of the easiest cities in the northeast for salah, with a major historic mosque and a Hui quarter around it.

Dandong mosque

Dandong

Central and active. Prayer on the border day is planned in the city before you drive out to Hushan.

A central mosque in the city and short drives to everything. The border sites are outdoor, so hats in summer and layers in winter.

On the road: your guide carries a prayer mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet calculated for your exact dates, and stops the vehicle rather than the prayer.
Getting there

Airports, stations and onward connections

Shenyang Taoxian (SHE) airport, high-speed rail from Beijing in about two and a half hours.

Dandong

Timing

When to go

Shenyang

April to October. Winters are very cold but the palace is at its most atmospheric under snow.

Dandong

April to October. May and October are the most comfortable months.

December to February for the ice festival and the frozen river — expect −20 °C or colder in Harbin, so we plan indoor prayer stops and short outdoor blocks. June to September for a green, cool, comfortable version of the same region with Changbaishan at its best. Late September and early October are the brief autumn-colour window.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask us every week

It is private. There is no seat-in-coach departure and no joining other travellers — the vehicle, the guide and the 5 days belong to your party alone. You pick the start date and we build around it. That is also why the halal logistics work: a kitchen booking for four people is a conversation, not a contract.
Every restaurant on this route is a certified halal kitchen with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. In Shenyang, Dandong we use: Northeast Hui cooking: halal mutton hotpot, beef buns, grilled skewers, and a very good halal cold noodle in summer; Hui halal restaurants on the riverfront: mutton skewers, beef buns, hotpot and a good cold noodle. You receive the complete list with street addresses before you fly, and your guide re-confirms each booking the day before you eat there.
Shenyang South Mosque in Shenyang (Large, historic, central and very active. Wudhu on site.); Dandong mosque in Dandong (Central and active. Prayer on the border day is planned in the city before you drive out to Hushan.). On the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time. Every vehicle carries a prayer mat, a compass and a sheet of prayer times calculated for your exact dates.
This is our gentlest pacing: short legs, one base at a time, and most days are a city day rather than a road day. Shenyang · Dandong are spread over 5 days, so you are never in the vehicle long enough to lose a prayer.
Yes, and we do it often. Suhoor boxes are delivered to your hotel before Fajr, afternoons are kept slow, iftar is confirmed at a certified halal restaurant every night, and we find you a mosque for Taraweeh wherever you happen to be. If you want to spend the last ten nights or Eid in one city, tell us and we will re-cut the route around it.
International flights and Chinese visas are quoted separately. Travel insurance, personal shopping, optional activities outside the plan and tips are not included — and we do not add shopping stops to make up the difference. Everything listed under What is included is genuinely in the price.
