Overview

What the Chongqing River City is

Built vertically on cliffs above the Yangtze, and the home of halal hotpot done properly. Stilted riverfront, the cableway across the gorge, and the wartime-era mosque in Yuzhong, with Chengdu for the last two nights.

This is a private departure, not a shared coach. You choose the dates, we rebuild the 5 days around them: Chongqing, Chengdu, in that order, with the halal restaurants and the mosques placed first and the sightseeing fitted around them.

The halal guarantee on this route: every restaurant is a certified halal restaurant with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. We send the full list with addresses before you fly, and your guide re-checks each booking the day before you eat there. Chengdu is straightforward: Huangcheng Mosque in the centre and Qingbaijiang Mosque to the north both handle daily and Friday prayers, and the halal restaurants around them are used to Muslim guests. Chengdu's high-speed rail links mean you can reach Xi'an in about 3 hours and Chongqing in about 1.5 hours without losing a prayer window.

Cities

Every city this route passes through

Each one with what you actually see there, what you eat, where you pray and how you arrive.

Chongqing

1 full day · March to May and September to November. Summer is famously one of the hottest places in China.

A municipality built vertically on cliffs above the Yangtze, with a Muslim community going back to the wartime capital years. Hotpot city, and the river gorges start just downstream.

Hongyadong and the riverfront — Stilted buildings stacked up the cliff above the Jialing river, best lit from the opposite bank after Maghrib.
Chongqing Mosque — A working mosque in the Yuzhong district serving a community that grew around the wartime years. Small, central, easy to reach.
Three Gorges Museum and the cableway — The museum explains the dam and the gorges properly; the Yangtze cableway across the river is the quickest way to understand how steep this city is.
Halal hotpot with a Muslim-run broth base is the whole reason to eat here, plus Hui beef noodle shops and roast duck halal-style. Your guide pre-books hotpot so the broth and the oil are halal from the start.
Chongqing Mosque — Central Yuzhong, with wudhu. Jumuah is small but regular.
Chongqing Jiangbei (CKG). High-speed rail from Chengdu in about 90 minutes.

Chengdu (Sichuan)

1 full day · March to May and September to November. Summers are hot and humid; winters are mild but grey.

The capital of Sichuan and one of the easiest big Chinese cities to eat halal in. A Hui quarter around Huangcheng Mosque, a long tradition of Muslim-run beef kitchens, and Giant Panda breeding base on the northern edge of town.

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding — Get there before 9am when the pandas are actually awake and feeding. The site is large and shaded, and a buggy saves a lot of walking.
Huangcheng Mosque — A Ming-dynasty mosque rebuilt in the 18th century, in the middle of the Hui quarter. Courtyard, ablution facilities and halal restaurants out the front door.
Jinli and Wide and Narrow Alleys — Rebuilt old-town streets for teahouses, courtyards and Sichuan snacks. We stick to the halal stalls and the teahouses rather than the pork-heavy menus.
Sichuan halal beef is a genuine tradition here: braised beef, beef hotpot with a halal broth, Muslim-run lamb skewers and hand-pulled noodles. There are more than a hundred halal kitchens inside the ring road.
Huangcheng Mosque — Central, historic and very active. Jumuah is easy and the surrounding streets are full of halal food.
Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU). Direct flights from most of China plus a good number of international gateways.
Day by day

How the 5 days actually run

A working skeleton, not a fixed package. We rebuild it around your dates, your prayer needs and whoever is travelling with you.

1

Arrive in Chongqing

Chongqing Jiangbei (CKG). High-speed rail from Chengdu in about 90 minutes. Your Muslim guide meets you at the gate with your name on a board. First stop is a hotel we have placed within walking distance of Chongqing Mosque, so Maghrib is a short walk rather than a negotiation. Dinner is already booked at a halal kitchen we have audited.

2

Chongqing — Hongyadong and the riverfront

Stilted buildings stacked up the cliff above the Jialing river, best lit from the opposite bank after Maghrib.

3

Chongqing to Chengdu

Leave after Dhuhr and drive out. Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU). Direct flights from most of China plus a good number of international gateways. Your guide breaks the drive for salah and for food rather than at a service station of his choosing. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Huangcheng Mosque.

4

Chengdu — Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Get there before 9am when the pandas are actually awake and feeding. The site is large and shaded, and a buggy saves a lot of walking.

5

Depart from Chengdu

A last halal breakfast, then the transfer out. Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU). We hold the vehicle until your flight is called, and if you are fasting we send a breakfast box the night before.

Every day is salah-first. Chongqing, Chengdu each have mosques we have used before; on the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time rather than at a service station of his choosing.
Highlights

What makes this route worth the flight

Hongyadong and the riverfront

Chongqing Mosque

A working mosque in the Yuzhong district serving a community that grew around the wartime years. Small, central, easy to reach.

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Get there before 9am when the pandas are actually awake and feeding. The site is large and shaded, and a buggy saves a lot of walking.

Huangcheng Mosque

A Ming-dynasty mosque rebuilt in the 18th century, in the middle of the Hui quarter. Courtyard, ablution facilities and halal restaurants out the front door.

Certified halal restaurants only, every single meal

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and the full list with addresses in your inbox before you fly.

Prayer planned into every day

Salah is placed first and sightseeing is built around it, not the other way round. Your guide carries a mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet.

Halal food

What you eat, city by city

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and no kitchen that handles both. This is the part we audit in person.

Chongqing

Halal hotpot with a Muslim-run broth base is the whole reason to eat here, plus Hui beef noodle shops and roast duck halal-style. Your guide pre-books hotpot so the broth and the oil are halal from the start. Chongqing Mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Chengdu

Sichuan halal beef is a genuine tradition here: braised beef, beef hotpot with a halal broth, Muslim-run lamb skewers and hand-pulled noodles. There are more than a hundred halal kitchens inside the ring road. Huangcheng Mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Fasting? Tell us and we run the route in Ramadan: suhoor boxes delivered before Fajr, slow afternoons, and iftar confirmed at a halal restaurant every single night.
Prayer

Where you pray on this route

Not a list of every mosque in the province — the ones we actually build into this itinerary, with wudhu and women’s space confirmed.

Chongqing Mosque

Chongqing

Central Yuzhong, with wudhu. Jumuah is small but regular.

Fewer mosques than Chengdu, so we plan the day around the Yuzhong mosque and keep a prayer sheet with your exact dates.

Huangcheng Mosque

Chengdu

Central, historic and very active. Jumuah is easy and the surrounding streets are full of halal food.

A strong Hui community and a central historic mosque, so salah is not a problem. The panda base has a quiet room; your guide knows where.

On the road: your guide carries a prayer mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet calculated for your exact dates, and stops the vehicle rather than the prayer.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask us every week

It is private. There is no seat-in-coach departure and no joining other travellers — the vehicle, the guide and the 5 days belong to your party alone. You pick the start date and we build around it. That is also why the halal logistics work: a kitchen booking for four people is a conversation, not a contract.
Every restaurant on this route is a certified halal kitchen with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. In Chongqing, Chengdu we use: Halal hotpot with a Muslim-run broth base is the whole reason to eat here, plus Hui beef noodle shops and roast duck halal-style; Sichuan halal beef is a genuine tradition here: braised beef, beef hotpot with a halal broth, Muslim-run lamb skewers and hand-pulled noodles. You receive the complete list with street addresses before you fly, and your guide re-confirms each booking the day before you eat there.
Chongqing Mosque in Chongqing (Central Yuzhong, with wudhu. Jumuah is small but regular.); Huangcheng Mosque in Chengdu (Central, historic and very active. Jumuah is easy and the surrounding streets are full of halal food.). On the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time. Every vehicle carries a prayer mat, a compass and a sheet of prayer times calculated for your exact dates.
This is our gentlest pacing: short legs, one base at a time, and most days are a city day rather than a road day. Chongqing · Chengdu are spread over 5 days, so you are never in the vehicle long enough to lose a prayer.
Yes, and we do it often. Suhoor boxes are delivered to your hotel before Fajr, afternoons are kept slow, iftar is confirmed at a certified halal restaurant every night, and we find you a mosque for Taraweeh wherever you happen to be. If you want to spend the last ten nights or Eid in one city, tell us and we will re-cut the route around it.
International flights and Chinese visas are quoted separately. Travel insurance, personal shopping, optional activities outside the plan and tips are not included — and we do not add shopping stops to make up the difference. Everything listed under What is included is genuinely in the price.
