Overview

What the Kangding & the Garze Tibetan Highlands is

Where Sichuan stops being a basin and becomes the plateau. Zheduo pass at over 4,000 m, Tagong grassland with nomad camps, and the poplar lines of Xinduqiao in October. The most demanding leg we run in the province, and we are honest about that.

This is a private departure, not a shared coach. You choose the dates, we rebuild the 8 days around them: Kangding & Garze, Chengdu, in that order, with the halal restaurants and the mosques placed first and the sightseeing fitted around them.

The halal guarantee on this route: every restaurant is a certified halal restaurant with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. We send the full list with addresses before you fly, and your guide re-checks each booking the day before you eat there. Chengdu is straightforward: Huangcheng Mosque in the centre and Qingbaijiang Mosque to the north both handle daily and Friday prayers, and the halal restaurants around them are used to Muslim guests. Chengdu's high-speed rail links mean you can reach Xi'an in about 3 hours and Chongqing in about 1.5 hours without losing a prayer window.

Every city this route passes through

Each one with what you actually see there, what you eat, where you pray and how you arrive.

Kangding & Garze (Sichuan)

2 full days · May to October. October has the best light; the high passes can see snow any month.

The Tibetan highlands of western Sichuan, where the road climbs out of the Sichuan basin and onto the plateau. Wide grassland, snow ranges, and a Tibetan culture that is entirely within China and genuinely hospitable.

Zheduo mountain pass — The road over the first 4,000-metre pass, with prayer flags at the top and the plateau opening out beyond it.
Tagong grassland — Summer nomad pasture at 3,700 m with a monastery on the hill and yurts where families will sell you fresh yoghurt.
Mugetee and Xinduqiao — Photography country: poplar lines, stone Tibetan houses and snow peaks, best in October.
Hui-run halal restaurants in Kangding town and along the main road serve beef noodles, yak hotpot and flatbread. On the plateau the choice is thin, so we plan every meal in advance.
Kangding mosque — The Hui community here is small but established, and the mosque is in town. On the plateau we plan prayer outdoors with a mat and compass.
Kangding airport at 4,280 m, or an overland drive of six to seven hours from Chengdu.

Chengdu (Sichuan)

3 full days · March to May and September to November. Summers are hot and humid; winters are mild but grey.

The capital of Sichuan and one of the easiest big Chinese cities to eat halal in. A Hui quarter around Huangcheng Mosque, a long tradition of Muslim-run beef kitchens, and Giant Panda breeding base on the northern edge of town.

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding — Get there before 9am when the pandas are actually awake and feeding. The site is large and shaded, and a buggy saves a lot of walking.
Huangcheng Mosque — A Ming-dynasty mosque rebuilt in the 18th century, in the middle of the Hui quarter. Courtyard, ablution facilities and halal restaurants out the front door.
Jinli and Wide and Narrow Alleys — Rebuilt old-town streets for teahouses, courtyards and Sichuan snacks. We stick to the halal stalls and the teahouses rather than the pork-heavy menus.
Sichuan halal beef is a genuine tradition here: braised beef, beef hotpot with a halal broth, Muslim-run lamb skewers and hand-pulled noodles. There are more than a hundred halal kitchens inside the ring road.
Huangcheng Mosque — Central, historic and very active. Jumuah is easy and the surrounding streets are full of halal food.
Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU). Direct flights from most of China plus a good number of international gateways.

Certified halal restaurants only, every single meal

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and the full list with addresses in your inbox before you fly.

Prayer planned into every day

Salah is placed first and sightseeing is built around it, not the other way round. Your guide carries a mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet.

Halal food

What you eat, city by city

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and no kitchen that handles both. This is the part we audit in person.

Kangding & Garze

Hui-run halal restaurants in Kangding town and along the main road serve beef noodles, yak hotpot and flatbread. On the plateau the choice is thin, so we plan every meal in advance. Kangding mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Chengdu

Sichuan halal beef is a genuine tradition here: braised beef, beef hotpot with a halal broth, Muslim-run lamb skewers and hand-pulled noodles. There are more than a hundred halal kitchens inside the ring road. Huangcheng Mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Fasting? Tell us and we run the route in Ramadan: suhoor boxes delivered before Fajr, slow afternoons, and iftar confirmed at a halal restaurant every single night.
Prayer

Where you pray on this route

Not a list of every mosque in the province — the ones we actually build into this itinerary, with wudhu and women’s space confirmed.

Kangding mosque

Kangding & Garze

The Hui community here is small but established, and the mosque is in town. On the plateau we plan prayer outdoors with a mat and compass.

This is the hardest leg in Sichuan for salah and for altitude, so we plan it honestly: prayer outdoors with a mat and a compass, slow ascent, and a night in Kangding before going higher.

Huangcheng Mosque

Chengdu

Central, historic and very active. Jumuah is easy and the surrounding streets are full of halal food.

A strong Hui community and a central historic mosque, so salah is not a problem. The panda base has a quiet room; your guide knows where.

On the road: your guide carries a prayer mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet calculated for your exact dates, and stops the vehicle rather than the prayer.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask us every week

It is private. There is no seat-in-coach departure and no joining other travellers — the vehicle, the guide and the 8 days belong to your party alone. You pick the start date and we build around it. That is also why the halal logistics work: a kitchen booking for four people is a conversation, not a contract.
Every restaurant on this route is a certified halal kitchen with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. In Kangding & Garze, Chengdu we use: Hui-run halal restaurants in Kangding town and along the main road serve beef noodles, yak hotpot and flatbread; Sichuan halal beef is a genuine tradition here: braised beef, beef hotpot with a halal broth, Muslim-run lamb skewers and hand-pulled noodles. You receive the complete list with street addresses before you fly, and your guide re-confirms each booking the day before you eat there.
Kangding mosque in Kangding & Garze (The Hui community here is small but established, and the mosque is in town. On the plateau we plan prayer outdoors with a mat and compass.); Huangcheng Mosque in Chengdu (Central, historic and very active. Jumuah is easy and the surrounding streets are full of halal food.). On the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time. Every vehicle carries a prayer mat, a compass and a sheet of prayer times calculated for your exact dates.
This route has real road days and some altitude. Kangding & Garze · Chengdu over 8 days means several half-day drives, and we build in a slower day where the altitude or the cold demands it. If anyone in your party is elderly, pregnant or travelling with very young children, tell us and we will lengthen it.
Yes, and we do it often. Suhoor boxes are delivered to your hotel before Fajr, afternoons are kept slow, iftar is confirmed at a certified halal restaurant every night, and we find you a mosque for Taraweeh wherever you happen to be. If you want to spend the last ten nights or Eid in one city, tell us and we will re-cut the route around it.
International flights and Chinese visas are quoted separately. Travel insurance, personal shopping, optional activities outside the plan and tips are not included — and we do not add shopping stops to make up the difference. Everything listed under What is included is genuinely in the price.
