Overview

What the Nanning & Detian Falls is

The border country of southwest Guangxi: one of the largest transnational waterfalls in Asia, the karst valley at Ming Shi, and the Tongling gorge. Genuinely rural, so we plan halal meals ahead and carry lunch on the driving days.

This is a private departure, not a shared coach. You choose the dates, we rebuild the 6 days around them: Nanning, Detian & Chongzuo, in that order, with the halal restaurants and the mosques placed first and the sightseeing fitted around them.

The halal guarantee on this route: every restaurant is a certified halal restaurant with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. We send the full list with addresses before you fly, and your guide re-checks each booking the day before you eat there. Guilin and Nanning both have mosques with regular congregations, and halal restaurants nearby. Yangshuo's Muslim community is small, so on Yangshuo days we confirm the current halal options before your trip and, if needed, arrange a mosque visit in Guilin or a prepared halal meal in Yangshuo. Your guide carries a prayer mat and keeps the day's salah times in the vehicle.

Cities

Every city this route passes through

Each one with what you actually see there, what you eat, where you pray and how you arrive.

Nanning (Guangxi)

1 full day · October to April. Summers are hot, humid and wet; the winter is mild and green.

The provincial capital, green and subtropical, with a Zhuang majority and a small but established Hui community. The gateway for the southern border routes and the Detian falls.

Qingxiu mountain — A large landscaped hill park inside the city, with palm avenues, a pagoda and a Buddhist temple. Best in the cool of the early morning.
Nanning mosque — The main Hui mosque, active and central, with a halal restaurant street beside it.
Guangxi Museum of Nationalities — A good, quick introduction to the Zhuang, Yao, Miao and Dong cultures of the province before you drive out to see them.
Hui halal restaurants near the mosque, plus Zhuang dishes prepared halal: rice noodle soups, steamed chicken and beef offal hotpot. Fewer choices than Guilin, all pre-checked.
Nanning mosque — Central and active, with wudhu. Jumuah is straightforward.
Nanning Wuxu (NNG) airport, high-speed rail from Guangzhou in about three and a half hours.

Detian & Chongzuo (Guangxi)

2 full days · May to October, when the falls carry water. Winter flow is a fraction of the summer volume.

The border country of southwest Guangxi, where the Guichun river drops over Detian, one of the largest transnational waterfalls in Asia, in a landscape of karst and sugarcane.

Detian waterfall — A multi-tiered fall more than 200 metres wide on the border, viewable from bamboo rafts at the base and from a path along the top.
Ming Shi karst valley — A flat karst valley of rice fields and water wheels along the river, quieter than Yangshuo and barely visited by international travellers.
Tongling gorge — A deep limestone canyon with a waterfall at the head of it, an hour further west.
Hui-run halal kitchens are thin here; we pre-arrange halal meals at the hotels and bring a halal lunch on the long driving days. Zhuang sour fish and mountain chicken, prepared halal.
Chongzuo mosque — In Chongzuo city. For the falls day we plan prayer at the visitor centre before you descend to the river.
About four hours by road from Nanning. No rail; we drive it as a two-day loop.
Day by day

How the 6 days actually run

A working skeleton, not a fixed package. We rebuild it around your dates, your prayer needs and whoever is travelling with you.

1

Arrive in Nanning

Nanning Wuxu (NNG) airport, high-speed rail from Guangzhou in about three and a half hours. Your Muslim guide meets you at the gate with your name on a board. First stop is a hotel we have placed within walking distance of Nanning mosque, so Maghrib is a short walk rather than a negotiation. Dinner is already booked at a halal kitchen we have audited.

2

Nanning — Qingxiu mountain

A large landscaped hill park inside the city, with palm avenues, a pagoda and a Buddhist temple. Best in the cool of the early morning.

3

Nanning to Detian & Chongzuo

Leave after Dhuhr and drive out. About four hours by road from Nanning. No rail; we drive it as a two-day loop. Your guide breaks the drive for salah and for food rather than at a service station of his choosing. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Chongzuo mosque.

4

Detian & Chongzuo — Detian waterfall

A multi-tiered fall more than 200 metres wide on the border, viewable from bamboo rafts at the base and from a path along the top.

5

Detian & Chongzuo — Ming Shi karst valley

A flat karst valley of rice fields and water wheels along the river, quieter than Yangshuo and barely visited by international travellers.

6

Depart from Detian & Chongzuo

A last halal breakfast, then the transfer out. About four hours by road from Nanning. We hold the vehicle until your flight is called, and if you are fasting we send a breakfast box the night before.

Every day is salah-first. Nanning, Detian & Chongzuo each have mosques we have used before; on the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time rather than at a service station of his choosing.
Highlights

What makes this route worth the flight

Qingxiu mountain

A large landscaped hill park inside the city, with palm avenues, a pagoda and a Buddhist temple. Best in the cool of the early morning.

Nanning mosque

The main Hui mosque, active and central, with a halal restaurant street beside it.

Detian waterfall

A multi-tiered fall more than 200 metres wide on the border, viewable from bamboo rafts at the base and from a path along the top.

Ming Shi karst valley

A flat karst valley of rice fields and water wheels along the river, quieter than Yangshuo and barely visited by international travellers.

Certified halal restaurants only, every single meal

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and the full list with addresses in your inbox before you fly.

Prayer planned into every day

Salah is placed first and sightseeing is built around it, not the other way round. Your guide carries a mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet.

Halal food

What you eat, city by city

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and no kitchen that handles both. This is the part we audit in person.

Nanning

Hui halal restaurants near the mosque, plus Zhuang dishes prepared halal: rice noodle soups, steamed chicken and beef offal hotpot. Fewer choices than Guilin, all pre-checked. Nanning mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Detian & Chongzuo

Hui-run halal kitchens are thin here; we pre-arrange halal meals at the hotels and bring a halal lunch on the long driving days. Zhuang sour fish and mountain chicken, prepared halal. Chongzuo mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Fasting? Tell us and we run the route in Ramadan: suhoor boxes delivered before Fajr, slow afternoons, and iftar confirmed at a halal restaurant every single night.
Prayer

Where you pray on this route

Not a list of every mosque in the province — the ones we actually build into this itinerary, with wudhu and women’s space confirmed.

Nanning mosque

Nanning

Central and active, with wudhu. Jumuah is straightforward.

One main mosque in the city and prayer rooms at the major service areas on the Detian road. Long drives are broken around prayer times anyway.

Chongzuo mosque

Detian & Chongzuo

In Chongzuo city. For the falls day we plan prayer at the visitor centre before you descend to the river.

This is the most genuinely rural leg in Guangxi, so we plan ahead: prayer in Chongzuo or at the visitor centre, a mat and compass in the vehicle, and a packed halal lunch.

On the road: your guide carries a prayer mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet calculated for your exact dates, and stops the vehicle rather than the prayer.
Getting there

Airports, stations and onward connections

Nanning

Nanning Wuxu (NNG) airport, high-speed rail from Guangzhou in about three and a half hours.

Detian & Chongzuo

About four hours by road from Nanning. No rail; we drive it as a two-day loop.

Timing

When to go

Nanning

October to April. Summers are hot, humid and wet; the winter is mild and green.

Detian & Chongzuo

May to October, when the falls carry water. Winter flow is a fraction of the summer volume.

April to June and September to November are ideal — warm, green and mostly dry. July and August are hot and wet with occasional typhoon remnants in the far south. The rice terraces are flooded and mirror-like in May and June, and gold at harvest in September and October.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask us every week

It is private. There is no seat-in-coach departure and no joining other travellers — the vehicle, the guide and the 6 days belong to your party alone. You pick the start date and we build around it. That is also why the halal logistics work: a kitchen booking for four people is a conversation, not a contract.
Every restaurant on this route is a certified halal kitchen with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. In Nanning, Detian & Chongzuo we use: Hui halal restaurants near the mosque, plus Zhuang dishes prepared halal: rice noodle soups, steamed chicken and beef offal hotpot; Hui-run halal kitchens are thin here; we pre-arrange halal meals at the hotels and bring a halal lunch on the long driving days. Expect one substantial drive between each base, usually timed to leave after Dhuhr, plus shorter local legs. Nanning · Detian & Chongzuo over 6 days is a comfortable fit for most families.
Yes, and we do it often. Suhoor boxes are delivered to your hotel before Fajr, afternoons are kept slow, iftar is confirmed at a certified halal restaurant every night, and we find you a mosque for Taraweeh wherever you happen to be. If you want to spend the last ten nights or Eid in one city, tell us and we will re-cut the route around it.
International flights and Chinese visas are quoted separately. Travel insurance, personal shopping, optional activities outside the plan and tips are not included — and we do not add shopping stops to make up the difference. Everything listed under What is included is genuinely in the price.
