Overview

What the Tengchong Volcano Country is

Extinct volcanic cones, hot springs and the old caravan town of Heshun on the road toward Myanmar, with a Hui quarter that goes back to the tea-horse road. Quieter than anywhere else in Yunnan.

This is a private departure, not a shared coach. You choose the dates, we rebuild the 6 days around them: Tengchong, Dali, in that order, with the halal restaurants and the mosques placed first and the sightseeing fitted around them.

The halal guarantee on this route: every restaurant is a certified halal restaurant with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. We send the full list with addresses before you fly, and your guide re-checks each booking the day before you eat there. Kunming has mosques within reach of the hotels we use and the city is used to Muslim visitors. On the Dali and Lijiang routes we plan around the mosques in each town, and again in the villages. The Yunnan schedule is slow enough that prayer never has to be squeezed, which is one of the reasons we recommend it to families and older travellers.

Each one with what you actually see there, what you eat, where you pray and how you arrive.

Tengchong (Yunnan)

1 full day · March to May and September to November. The summer rains are heavy on this side of the province.

A border county town of volcanoes, hot springs and old caravan culture on the road to Myanmar. Hui merchants settled here on the tea-horse road and the town still has a real Muslim quarter.

Volcano geopark — Extinct cones you can climb, with black basaltic columns and a hot spring village at the foot. Take the early morning for the balloons.
Heshun old town — A merchant village of courtyards and a library built by returning traders, quieter and older-feeling than Lijiang.
Beihai wetland — A floating grass mat on a shallow lake that you can walk across on floating boards, with water birds all around.
Hui halal restaurants in the old town and in Tengchong city: beef hotpot, hand-pulled noodles, grilled beef, and a very good local thin rice noodle.
Tengchong mosque — In the Hui quarter, active and central. Jumuah is straightforward.
Tengchong Tuofeng (TCZ) airport, or a long but beautiful drive west from Dali.

Dali (Yunnan)

2 full days · March to May and September to November. June to August is the rainy season but still warm.

A walled old town between Erhai lake and the Cangshan range, home of the Bai people and one of the oldest Hui settlements in Yunnan. Slow, sunny and the best base in the province.

Erhai lake loop — A full circuit by bike or by car along the lakeshore, through Bai villages, fishing platforms and reed beds. Best in the morning before the wind picks up.
Dali old town and the Hui quarter — Stone-paved streets inside the Ming walls, with a Hui neighbourhood that was settled centuries ago by Muslim merchants and soldiers.
Cangshan — Nineteen peaks behind the town, with a cable car, a cloud-top path and old temples tucked into the gorges.
Bai and Hui cooking together: halal grilled beef and cheese, sour fish made with lake fish and halal preparation, hand-pulled noodles and a very good halal hotpot.
Dali mosque — In the Hui quarter inside the old town, active and easy to reach on foot from most hotels.
Dali (DLU) airport, or high-speed rail from Kunming in about two hours.
Day by day

How the 6 days actually run

A working skeleton, not a fixed package. We rebuild it around your dates, your prayer needs and whoever is travelling with you.

1

Arrive in Tengchong

Tengchong Tuofeng (TCZ) airport, or a long but beautiful drive west from Dali. Your Muslim guide meets you at the gate with your name on a board. First stop is a hotel we have placed within walking distance of Tengchong mosque, so Maghrib is a short walk rather than a negotiation. Dinner is already booked at a halal kitchen we have audited.

2

Tengchong — Volcano geopark

3

Tengchong to Dali

Leave after Dhuhr and drive out. Dali (DLU) airport, or high-speed rail from Kunming in about two hours. Your guide breaks the drive for salah and for food rather than at a service station of his choosing. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Dali mosque.

4

Dali — Erhai lake loop

A full circuit by bike or by car along the lakeshore, through Bai villages, fishing platforms and reed beds. Best in the morning before the wind picks up.

5

6

Depart from Dali

A last halal breakfast, then the transfer out. Dali (DLU) airport, or high-speed rail from Kunming in about two hours. We hold the vehicle until your flight is called, and if you are fasting we send a breakfast box the night before.

Every day is salah-first. Tengchong, Dali each have mosques we have used before; on the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time rather than at a service station of his choosing.

What you eat, city by city

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and no kitchen that handles both. This is the part we audit in person.

Prayer

Where you pray on this route

Not a list of every mosque in the province — the ones we actually build into this itinerary, with wudhu and women’s space confirmed.

Tengchong mosque

Tengchong

In the Hui quarter, active and central. Jumuah is straightforward.

A mosque in the town and hot-spring hotels that are used to Muslim guests. Days are short drives, so prayer planning is easy.

Dali mosque

Dali

In the Hui quarter inside the old town, active and easy to reach on foot from most hotels.

A mosque inside the old town means you never plan around a drive. Erhai loop days are scheduled so you are back in town for Maghrib.

On the road: your guide carries a prayer mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet calculated for your exact dates, and stops the vehicle rather than the prayer.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask us every week

It is private. There is no seat-in-coach departure and no joining other travellers — the vehicle, the guide and the 6 days belong to your party alone. You pick the start date and we build around it. That is also why the halal logistics work: a kitchen booking for four people is a conversation, not a contract.
Every restaurant on this route is a certified halal kitchen with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. In Tengchong, Dali we use: Hui halal restaurants in the old town and in Tengchong city: beef hotpot, hand-pulled noodles, grilled beef, and a very good local thin rice noodle; Bai and Hui cooking together: halal grilled beef and cheese, sour fish made with lake fish and halal preparation, hand-pulled noodles and a very good halal hotpot. You receive the complete list with street addresses before you fly, and your guide re-confirms each booking the day before you eat there.
Tengchong mosque in Tengchong (In the Hui quarter, active and central. Jumuah is straightforward.); Dali mosque in Dali (In the Hui quarter inside the old town, active and easy to reach on foot from most hotels.). On the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time. Every vehicle carries a prayer mat, a compass and a sheet of prayer times calculated for your exact dates.
Expect one substantial drive between each base, usually timed to leave after Dhuhr, plus shorter local legs. Tengchong · Dali over 6 days is a comfortable fit for most families.
Yes, and we do it often. Suhoor boxes are delivered to your hotel before Fajr, afternoons are kept slow, iftar is confirmed at a certified halal restaurant every night, and we find you a mosque for Taraweeh wherever you happen to be. If you want to spend the last ten nights or Eid in one city, tell us and we will re-cut the route around it.
International flights and Chinese visas are quoted separately. Travel insurance, personal shopping, optional activities outside the plan and tips are not included — and we do not add shopping stops to make up the difference. Everything listed under What is included is genuinely in the price.
