Overview

What the Yunnan Family Soft Highlands is

Nine days at family pace with one hotel per base and no altitude shock. Lake loops, old towns, warm tropical evenings at the end, and halal restaurants pre-booked in every single town before you fly.

This is a private departure, not a shared coach. You choose the dates, we rebuild the 9 days around them: Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Xishuangbanna, in that order, with the halal restaurants and the mosques placed first and the sightseeing fitted around them.

The halal guarantee on this route: every restaurant is a certified halal restaurant with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. We send the full list with addresses before you fly, and your guide re-checks each booking the day before you eat there. Kunming has mosques within reach of the hotels we use and the city is used to Muslim visitors. On the Dali and Lijiang routes we plan around the mosques in each town, and again in the villages. The Yunnan schedule is slow enough that prayer never has to be squeezed, which is one of the reasons we recommend it to families and older travellers.

Cities

Every city this route passes through

Each one with what you actually see there, what you eat, where you pray and how you arrive.

Kunming (Yunnan)

1 full day · All year. Kunming genuinely earns the Spring City name; December to March is dry and sunny.

The Spring City, at 1,890 m with mild weather almost all year, and the Hui community of Yunnan at its densest. Every regional route in this province starts or ends here.

Stone Forest — Karst pinnacles an hour east, a UNESCO-listed landscape with paved paths through the stone. Busy but genuinely strange to walk through.
Nancheng Mosque — A Qing-dynasty mosque in the old centre rebuilt along Chinese temple lines, and the anchor of the Hui quarter. Wudhu on site, halal food within a minute.
Dianchi lake and Green Lake park — Big water and a city park where people practise tai chi, sing and fly kites. Black-headed gulls arrive at Green Lake from November.
Yunnan Hui cooking: beef hotpot with a sour papaya broth, hand-pulled noodles, grilled beef skewers, and cross-the-bridge noodles made halal with beef. Kunming has several hundred halal kitchens.
Nancheng Mosque — Central, historic and very active. Jumuah is easy and the surrounding quarter is full of halal restaurants.
Kunming Changshui (KMG), direct from most Chinese cities and a growing number of Southeast Asian hubs.

Dali (Yunnan)

1 full day · March to May and September to November. June to August is the rainy season but still warm.

A walled old town between Erhai lake and the Cangshan range, home of the Bai people and one of the oldest Hui settlements in Yunnan. Slow, sunny and the best base in the province.

Erhai lake loop — A full circuit by bike or by car along the lakeshore, through Bai villages, fishing platforms and reed beds. Best in the morning before the wind picks up.
Dali old town and the Hui quarter — Stone-paved streets inside the Ming walls, with a Hui neighbourhood that was settled centuries ago by Muslim merchants and soldiers.
Cangshan — Nineteen peaks behind the town, with a cable car, a cloud-top path and old temples tucked into the gorges.
Bai and Hui cooking together: halal grilled beef and cheese, sour fish made with lake fish and halal preparation, hand-pulled noodles and a very good halal hotpot.
Dali mosque — In the Hui quarter inside the old town, active and easy to reach on foot from most hotels.
Dali (DLU) airport, or high-speed rail from Kunming in about two hours.

Lijiang (Yunnan)

1 full day · March to May and September to November. Winter is cold at night but the snow mountain is at its clearest.

A Naxi old town of cobblestones and canals at 2,400 m, with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain directly behind it. Hui traders settled here on the old tea-horse road and their kitchens are still here.

Lijiang old town — Canal-side lanes and wooden Naxi houses, busy in the evening and quiet before 8am, which is when it is actually worth walking.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain — A 5,596-metre glacier park with a cable car to 4,506 m. Altitude is significant; we keep the climb short and carry oxygen in the vehicle.
Shuhe and Baisha — Two smaller, older settlements just north of Lijiang, with far fewer visitors and the best-preserved Naxi murals.
Hui-run halal restaurants in and around the old town: Naxi-style hotpot made halal, grilled beef, hand-pulled noodles and yak beef. Your guide pre-books; the tourist menus here are not reliably halal.
Lijiang mosque — Just outside the old town, serving the Hui families of the tea-horse road. Small and welcoming.
Lijiang Sanyi (LJG) airport, or high-speed rail from Dali in about 80 minutes.

Xishuangbanna (Yunnan)

1 full day · November to April. The summer monsoon is hot and very wet; April is the water-splashing festival.

The tropical south: Dai and Hani culture, rubber and tea plantations, and a climate closer to Southeast Asia than to anywhere else in China. Night markets, tropical fruit and very warm evenings.

Mengle Great Buddha temple — A large Theravada temple on a hill above Jinghong, with a gold stupa and views across the Mekong valley.
Tropical botanical garden — One of the largest in China, on a peninsula of the Luosuo river, with a thousand hectares of planted forest and an enormous collection of fruit trees.
Gaozhuang night market — The big one: grilled meat, tropical fruit, Dai-style barbecue and a lantern-lit riverside. We walk you to the halal stalls.
Dai-style barbecue and tropical fruit, plus Hui-run halal kitchens in Jinghong town. More limited than Kunming, so we pre-book dinners and stick to the Muslim-run stalls at the markets.
Jinghong mosque — A small active mosque in town. Prayer rooms are not standard in the parks, so we plan around town.
Xishuangbanna Gasa (JHG) airport, direct from Kunming in an hour. High-speed rail from Kunming in about three hours.
Day by day

How the 9 days actually run

A working skeleton, not a fixed package. We rebuild it around your dates, your prayer needs and whoever is travelling with you.

1

Arrive in Kunming

Kunming Changshui (KMG), direct from most Chinese cities and a growing number of Southeast Asian hubs. Your Muslim guide meets you at the gate with your name on a board. First stop is a hotel we have placed within walking distance of Nancheng Mosque, so Maghrib is a short walk rather than a negotiation. Dinner is already booked at a halal kitchen we have audited.

2

Kunming — Stone Forest

Karst pinnacles an hour east, a UNESCO-listed landscape with paved paths through the stone. Busy but genuinely strange to walk through.

3

Kunming to Dali

Leave after Dhuhr and drive out. Dali (DLU) airport, or high-speed rail from Kunming in about two hours. Your guide breaks the drive for salah and for food rather than at a service station of his choosing. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Dali mosque.

4

Dali — Erhai lake loop

A full circuit by bike or by car along the lakeshore, through Bai villages, fishing platforms and reed beds. Best in the morning before the wind picks up.

5

Dali to Lijiang

Set off mid-morning, once the light is good. Lijiang Sanyi (LJG) airport, or high-speed rail from Dali in about 80 minutes. We stop for salah, and lunch is a halal kitchen we have booked on the route rather than whatever is nearest the motorway. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Lijiang mosque.

6

Lijiang — Lijiang old town

Canal-side lanes and wooden Naxi houses, busy in the evening and quiet before 8am, which is when it is actually worth walking.

7

Lijiang to Xishuangbanna

Depart after a late breakfast and a short walk. Xishuangbanna Gasa (JHG) airport, direct from Kunming in an hour. High-speed rail from Kunming in about three hours. The drive is broken twice: once for prayer, once for a proper halal meal, with water and a prayer mat in the vehicle. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Jinghong mosque.

8

Xishuangbanna — Mengle Great Buddha temple

A large Theravada temple on a hill above Jinghong, with a gold stupa and views across the Mekong valley.

9

Depart from Xishuangbanna

A last halal breakfast, then the transfer out. Xishuangbanna Gasa (JHG) airport, direct from Kunming in an hour. We hold the vehicle until your flight is called, and if you are fasting we send a breakfast box the night before.

Every day is salah-first. Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Xishuangbanna each have mosques we have used before; on the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time rather than at a service station of his choosing.

Lijiang old town

Canal-side lanes and wooden Naxi houses, busy in the evening and quiet before 8am, which is when it is actually worth walking.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

A 5,596-metre glacier park with a cable car to 4,506 m. Altitude is significant; we keep the climb short and carry oxygen in the vehicle.

Halal food

What you eat, city by city

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and no kitchen that handles both. This is the part we audit in person.

Kunming

Yunnan Hui cooking: beef hotpot with a sour papaya broth, hand-pulled noodles, grilled beef skewers, and cross-the-bridge noodles made halal with beef. Kunming has several hundred halal kitchens. Nancheng Mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Dali

Bai and Hui cooking together: halal grilled beef and cheese, sour fish made with lake fish and halal preparation, hand-pulled noodles and a very good halal hotpot. Dali mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Lijiang

Hui-run halal restaurants in and around the old town: Naxi-style hotpot made halal, grilled beef, hand-pulled noodles and yak beef. Your guide pre-books; the tourist menus here are not reliably halal. Lijiang mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Xishuangbanna

Dai-style barbecue and tropical fruit, plus Hui-run halal kitchens in Jinghong town. More limited than Kunming, so we pre-book dinners and stick to the Muslim-run stalls at the markets. Jinghong mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Fasting? Tell us and we run the route in Ramadan: suhoor boxes delivered before Fajr, slow afternoons, and iftar confirmed at a halal restaurant every single night.
Prayer

Where you pray on this route

Not a list of every mosque in the province — the ones we actually build into this itinerary, with wudhu and women’s space confirmed.

Nancheng Mosque

Kunming

Central, historic and very active. Jumuah is easy and the surrounding quarter is full of halal restaurants.

One of the easiest cities in southern China for salah. Central mosque, several others in the Hui districts, and hotels used to Muslim guests.

Dali mosque

Dali

In the Hui quarter inside the old town, active and easy to reach on foot from most hotels.

A mosque inside the old town means you never plan around a drive. Erhai loop days are scheduled so you are back in town for Maghrib.

Lijiang mosque

Lijiang

Just outside the old town, serving the Hui families of the tea-horse road. Small and welcoming.

A mosque near the old town and a quiet room at the mountain park. We keep the cable-car trip short, because altitude and fasting do not mix.

Jinghong mosque

Xishuangbanna

A small active mosque in town. Prayer rooms are not standard in the parks, so we plan around town.

Plan prayer in Jinghong and carry a mat for the garden and the market evenings. The heat means Fajr and Maghrib are the comfortable hours anyway.

On the road: your guide carries a prayer mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet calculated for your exact dates, and stops the vehicle rather than the prayer.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask us every week

It is private. There is no seat-in-coach departure and no joining other travellers — the vehicle, the guide and the 9 days belong to your party alone. You pick the start date and we build around it. That is also why the halal logistics work: a kitchen booking for four people is a conversation, not a contract.
Every restaurant on this route is a certified halal kitchen with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. In Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Xishuangbanna we use: Yunnan Hui cooking: beef hotpot with a sour papaya broth, hand-pulled noodles, grilled beef skewers, and cross-the-bridge noodles made halal with beef; Bai and Hui cooking together: halal grilled beef and cheese, sour fish made with lake fish and halal preparation, hand-pulled noodles and a very good halal hotpot; Hui-run halal restaurants in and around the old town: Naxi-style hotpot made halal, grilled beef, hand-pulled noodles and yak beef; Dai-style barbecue and tropical fruit, plus Hui-run halal kitchens in Jinghong town. You receive the complete list with street addresses before you fly, and your guide re-confirms each booking the day before you eat there.
Nancheng Mosque in Kunming (Central, historic and very active. Jumuah is easy and the surrounding quarter is full of halal restaurants.); Dali mosque in Dali (In the Hui quarter inside the old town, active and easy to reach on foot from most hotels.); Lijiang mosque in Lijiang (Just outside the old town, serving the Hui families of the tea-horse road. Small and welcoming.); Jinghong mosque in Xishuangbanna (A small active mosque in town. Prayer rooms are not standard in the parks, so we plan around town.). On the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time. Every vehicle carries a prayer mat, a compass and a sheet of prayer times calculated for your exact dates.
This is our gentlest pacing: short legs, one base at a time, and most days are a city day rather than a road day. Kunming · Dali · Lijiang · Xishuangbanna are spread over 9 days, so you are never in the vehicle long enough to lose a prayer.
Yes, and we do it often. Suhoor boxes are delivered to your hotel before Fajr, afternoons are kept slow, iftar is confirmed at a certified halal restaurant every night, and we find you a mosque for Taraweeh wherever you happen to be. If you want to spend the last ten nights or Eid in one city, tell us and we will re-cut the route around it.
International flights and Chinese visas are quoted separately. Travel insurance, personal shopping, optional activities outside the plan and tips are not included — and we do not add shopping stops to make up the difference. Everything listed under What is included is genuinely in the price.
