Overview

What the Shangri-La & the Tibetan Highlands is

Black yak, pine forest and one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the southwest, at 3,300 m. We build in a rest day at altitude, because this leg is genuinely demanding, and we plan prayer honestly for the park days.

This is a private departure, not a shared coach. You choose the dates, we rebuild the 7 days around them: Shangri-La, Lijiang, in that order, with the halal restaurants and the mosques placed first and the sightseeing fitted around them.

The halal guarantee on this route: every restaurant is a certified halal restaurant with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. We send the full list with addresses before you fly, and your guide re-checks each booking the day before you eat there. Kunming has mosques within reach of the hotels we use and the city is used to Muslim visitors. On the Dali and Lijiang routes we plan around the mosques in each town, and again in the villages. The Yunnan schedule is slow enough that prayer never has to be squeezed, which is one of the reasons we recommend it to families and older travellers.

Each one with what you actually see there, what you eat, where you pray and how you arrive.

Shangri-La (Yunnan)

2 full days · May to October. June and July are flower season on the grassland; winter brings the cranes.

The Tibetan highlands of northwest Yunnan at 3,300 m: grassland, black yak, pine forest and one of the largest monasteries in the Tibetan world. Cold, high and absolutely worth the drive.

Songzanlin Monastery — A vast hillside complex built in 1679, the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan. We visit as heritage and architecture.
Napa lake and wetland — Seasonal lake and summer pasture on the edge of town, with black-necked cranes wintering here from November.
Pudacuo National Park — A high plateau of lakes, spruce forest and boardwalks at 3,500 to 4,100 m. Half a day, slow walking.
Hui-run halal restaurants in town serve beef noodles, yak hotpot and flatbread. Tibetan butter tea is offered as hospitality; we simply decline and explain, which is always accepted.
Shangri-La mosque — Small but serving an established Hui community in the county town.
Shangri-La (DIG) airport at 3,280 m, or a four-hour drive north from Lijiang.

Lijiang (Yunnan)

2 full days · March to May and September to November. Winter is cold at night but the snow mountain is at its clearest.

A Naxi old town of cobblestones and canals at 2,400 m, with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain directly behind it. Hui traders settled here on the old tea-horse road and their kitchens are still here.

Lijiang old town — Canal-side lanes and wooden Naxi houses, busy in the evening and quiet before 8am, which is when it is actually worth walking.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain — A 5,596-metre glacier park with a cable car to 4,506 m. Altitude is significant; we keep the climb short and carry oxygen in the vehicle.
Shuhe and Baisha — Two smaller, older settlements just north of Lijiang, with far fewer visitors and the best-preserved Naxi murals.
Hui-run halal restaurants in and around the old town: Naxi-style hotpot made halal, grilled beef, hand-pulled noodles and yak beef. Your guide pre-books; the tourist menus here are not reliably halal.
Lijiang mosque — Just outside the old town, serving the Hui families of the tea-horse road. Small and welcoming.
Lijiang Sanyi (LJG) airport, or high-speed rail from Dali in about 80 minutes.
Day by day

How the 7 days actually run

A working skeleton, not a fixed package. We rebuild it around your dates, your prayer needs and whoever is travelling with you.

1

Arrive in Shangri-La

Shangri-La (DIG) airport at 3,280 m, or a four-hour drive north from Lijiang. Your Muslim guide meets you at the gate with your name on a board. First stop is a hotel we have placed within walking distance of Shangri-La mosque, so Maghrib is a short walk rather than a negotiation. Dinner is already booked at a halal kitchen we have audited.

2

Shangri-La — Songzanlin Monastery

A vast hillside complex built in 1679, the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan. We visit as heritage and architecture.

3

Shangri-La — Napa lake and wetland

Seasonal lake and summer pasture on the edge of town, with black-necked cranes wintering here from November.

4

Shangri-La to Lijiang

Leave after Dhuhr and drive out. Lijiang Sanyi (LJG) airport, or high-speed rail from Dali in about 80 minutes. Your guide breaks the drive for salah and for food rather than at a service station of his choosing. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Lijiang mosque.

5

Lijiang — Lijiang old town

Canal-side lanes and wooden Naxi houses, busy in the evening and quiet before 8am, which is when it is actually worth walking.

6

Lijiang — Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

A 5,596-metre glacier park with a cable car to 4,506 m. Altitude is significant; we keep the climb short and carry oxygen in the vehicle.

7

Depart from Lijiang

A last halal breakfast, then the transfer out. Lijiang Sanyi (LJG) airport, or high-speed rail from Dali in about 80 minutes. We hold the vehicle until your flight is called, and if you are fasting we send a breakfast box the night before.

Every day is salah-first. Shangri-La, Lijiang each have mosques we have used before; on the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time rather than at a service station of his choosing.
Highlights

What makes this route worth the flight

Songzanlin Monastery

A vast hillside complex built in 1679, the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan. We visit as heritage and architecture.

Napa lake and wetland

Seasonal lake and summer pasture on the edge of town, with black-necked cranes wintering here from November.

Lijiang old town

Canal-side lanes and wooden Naxi houses, busy in the evening and quiet before 8am, which is when it is actually worth walking.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

A 5,596-metre glacier park with a cable car to 4,506 m. Altitude is significant; we keep the climb short and carry oxygen in the vehicle.

Certified halal restaurants only, every single meal

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and the full list with addresses in your inbox before you fly.

Prayer planned into every day

Salah is placed first and sightseeing is built around it, not the other way round. Your guide carries a mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet.

Halal food

What you eat, city by city

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and no kitchen that handles both. This is the part we audit in person.

Shangri-La

Hui-run halal restaurants in town serve beef noodles, yak hotpot and flatbread. Tibetan butter tea is offered as hospitality; we simply decline and explain, which is always accepted. Shangri-La mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Lijiang

Hui-run halal restaurants in and around the old town: Naxi-style hotpot made halal, grilled beef, hand-pulled noodles and yak beef. Your guide pre-books; the tourist menus here are not reliably halal. Lijiang mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Fasting? Tell us and we run the route in Ramadan: suhoor boxes delivered before Fajr, slow afternoons, and iftar confirmed at a halal restaurant every single night.
Prayer

Where you pray on this route

Not a list of every mosque in the province — the ones we actually build into this itinerary, with wudhu and women’s space confirmed.

Shangri-La mosque

Shangri-La

Small but serving an established Hui community in the county town.

The honest answer: altitude, cold and long drives make this the most demanding prayer leg in Yunnan. We build in a rest day, plan prayer in town, and carry a mat and compass for the park.

Lijiang mosque

Lijiang

Just outside the old town, serving the Hui families of the tea-horse road. Small and welcoming.

A mosque near the old town and a quiet room at the mountain park. We keep the cable-car trip short, because altitude and fasting do not mix.

On the road: your guide carries a prayer mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet calculated for your exact dates, and stops the vehicle rather than the prayer.
Getting there

Lijiang

March to May and September to November. Winter is cold at night but the snow mountain is at its clearest.

October to April is the dry season and the best time to travel: clear skies, mild days and no rain in the mountains. March and April bring the flower season. July and August are the rainy months with heavy afternoon showers, though that is also wild-mushroom season. Shangri-La is cold from November and often snowbound in January.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask us every week

It is private. There is no seat-in-coach departure and no joining other travellers — the vehicle, the guide and the 7 days belong to your party alone. You pick the start date and we build around it. That is also why the halal logistics work: a kitchen booking for four people is a conversation, not a contract.
Every restaurant on this route is a certified halal kitchen with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. In Shangri-La, Lijiang we use: Hui-run halal restaurants in town serve beef noodles, yak hotpot and flatbread; Hui-run halal restaurants in and around the old town: Naxi-style hotpot made halal, grilled beef, hand-pulled noodles and yak beef. You receive the complete list with street addresses before you fly, and your guide re-confirms each booking the day before you eat there.
Shangri-La mosque in Shangri-La (Small but serving an established Hui community in the county town.); Lijiang mosque in Lijiang (Just outside the old town, serving the Hui families of the tea-horse road. Small and welcoming.). On the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time. Every vehicle carries a prayer mat, a compass and a sheet of prayer times calculated for your exact dates.
This route has real road days and some altitude. Shangri-La · Lijiang over 7 days means several half-day drives, and we build in a slower day where the altitude or the cold demands it. If anyone in your party is elderly, pregnant or travelling with very young children, tell us and we will lengthen it.
Yes, and we do it often. Suhoor boxes are delivered to your hotel before Fajr, afternoons are kept slow, iftar is confirmed at a certified halal restaurant every night, and we find you a mosque for Taraweeh wherever you happen to be. If you want to spend the last ten nights or Eid in one city, tell us and we will re-cut the route around it.
International flights and Chinese visas are quoted separately. Travel insurance, personal shopping, optional activities outside the plan and tips are not included — and we do not add shopping stops to make up the difference. Everything listed under What is included is genuinely in the price.
