Overview

What the Xining & Qinghai Lake Highland Loop is

Our home province at an easy pace. Two nights in Xining with Dongguan Grand Mosque and the Hui market streets, one long day out to Qinghai Lake at 3,200 m, then south to Xiahe and Labrang Monastery on the Tibetan plateau before looping back. Built for families and first-time highland visitors.

This is a private departure, not a shared coach. You choose the dates, we rebuild the 6 days around them: Xining, Xiahe, in that order, with the halal restaurants and the mosques placed first and the sightseeing fitted around them.

The halal guarantee on this route: every restaurant is a certified halal restaurant with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. We send the full list with addresses before you fly, and your guide re-checks each booking the day before you eat there. Both Xining and Lanzhou have mosques within walking distance of the hotels we book, and Jumu'ah is straightforward in either city. On the Qinghai Lake and Gansu corridor drives we plan the day around a mid-afternoon arrival at a rest stop with a prayer room, or we build in a mosque stop. Your guide carries a prayer mat, a compass and a current prayer-time sheet in the vehicle.

Cities

Every city this route passes through

Each one with what you actually see there, what you eat, where you pray and how you arrive.

Xining (Qinghai)

1 full day · May to early October. July is greenest and busiest, September is cooler and quieter.

Our home base, and the easiest halal city in China to land in. Roughly one person in four here is Muslim, Dongguan Grand Mosque sits inside the oldest market streets, and beef noodle shops unlock their doors before Fajr.

Dongguan Grand Mosque — One of the largest mosques in northwest China, with a vast courtyard, a separate womens prayer hall and wudhu facilities on site. Jumuah draws tens of thousands, and the surrounding streets are lined with halal butchers and bakeries.
Kumbum Monastery, Huangzhong — A 16th-century Tibetan Buddhist monastery half an hour south of the city, known for its butter-sculpture hall and its painted corridors. We visit as heritage and architecture, never as worship.
Qinghai Lake shoreline — 3,200 m and about two and a half hours west. Grassland, yak herds and very wide skies; from June the rapeseed along the approach road comes into flower.
Qinghai hand-grabbed mutton, beef lamian for breakfast, yak yoghurt and sweet eight-treasure tea. In Xining halal is the default rather than the exception, so you can walk into almost any street-corner restaurant.
Dongguan Grand Mosque — Five minutes on foot from the hotels we book. Jumuah around 13:30 in winter and a little later in summer.
Xining Caojiabao (XNN), 30 minutes from the centre. Direct flights from Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Guangzhou and Urumqi.

Xiahe (Gansu)

2 full days · June to September. Winter is very cold and some grassland camps close.

A single-street town at 2,900 m on the edge of the Tibetan plateau, built around Labrang Monastery. The surrounding grassland is grazed by nomad families, and the halal restaurants here are run by Hui Muslims who arrived with the caravan trade.

Labrang Monastery — One of the six great monasteries of the Gelug tradition, with a 3km circumambulation corridor of prayer wheels. We visit as architecture and living heritage; your guide explains what you are seeing and we never join in worship.
Sangke grassland — Forty minutes out by road. Wide summer pasture with nomad tents, and in July and August the tent restaurant season is in full swing.
Ganjia plateau — Old rammed-earth fortress walls and limestone gorges, quieter than Sangke and an easy half-day loop.
Hui-run halal restaurants along the main street serve hand-pulled noodles, yak beef, mutton skewers and butter tea. Choices are fewer than Xining but the food is genuinely good and reliably halal.
Xiahe Hui mosque — Small, on the main street, and used by the Hui families who run the restaurants. Wudhu available.
Four hours by road from Lanzhou, five from Xining. Overland only; we pair it with Linxia or with a Xining return.
Day by day

How the 6 days actually run

A working skeleton, not a fixed package. We rebuild it around your dates, your prayer needs and whoever is travelling with you.

1

Arrive in Xining

Xining Caojiabao (XNN), 30 minutes from the centre. Direct flights from Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Guangzhou and Urumqi. Your Muslim guide meets you at the gate with your name on a board. First stop is a hotel we have placed within walking distance of Dongguan Grand Mosque, so Maghrib is a short walk rather than a negotiation. Dinner is already booked at a halal kitchen we have audited.

2

Xining — Dongguan Grand Mosque

One of the largest mosques in northwest China, with a vast courtyard, a separate womens prayer hall and wudhu facilities on site. Jumuah draws tens of thousands, and the surrounding streets are lined with halal butchers and bakeries.

3

Xining to Xiahe

Leave after Dhuhr and drive out. Four hours by road from Lanzhou, five from Xining. Overland only; we pair it with Linxia or with a Xining return. Your guide breaks the drive for salah and for food rather than at a service station of his choosing. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Xiahe Hui mosque.

4

Xiahe — Labrang Monastery

One of the six great monasteries of the Gelug tradition, with a 3km circumambulation corridor of prayer wheels. We visit as architecture and living heritage; your guide explains what you are seeing and we never join in worship.

5

Xiahe — Sangke grassland

Forty minutes out by road. Wide summer pasture with nomad tents, and in July and August the tent restaurant season is in full swing.

6

Depart from Xiahe

A last halal breakfast, then the transfer out. Four hours by road from Lanzhou, five from Xining. We hold the vehicle until your flight is called, and if you are fasting we send a breakfast box the night before.

Every day is salah-first. Xining, Xiahe each have mosques we have used before; on the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time rather than at a service station of his choosing.
Highlights

What makes this route worth the flight

Dongguan Grand Mosque

One of the largest mosques in northwest China, with a vast courtyard, a separate womens prayer hall and wudhu facilities on site. Jumuah draws tens of thousands, and the surrounding streets are lined with halal butchers and bakeries.

Kumbum Monastery, Huangzhong

A 16th-century Tibetan Buddhist monastery half an hour south of the city, known for its butter-sculpture hall and its painted corridors. We visit as heritage and architecture, never as worship.

Labrang Monastery

One of the six great monasteries of the Gelug tradition, with a 3km circumambulation corridor of prayer wheels. We visit as architecture and living heritage; your guide explains what you are seeing and we never join in worship.

Sangke grassland

Forty minutes out by road. Wide summer pasture with nomad tents, and in July and August the tent restaurant season is in full swing.

Certified halal restaurants only, every single meal

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and the full list with addresses in your inbox before you fly.

Prayer planned into every day

Salah is placed first and sightseeing is built around it, not the other way round. Your guide carries a mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet.

Halal food

What you eat, city by city

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and no kitchen that handles both. This is the part we audit in person.

Xining

Qinghai hand-grabbed mutton, beef lamian for breakfast, yak yoghurt and sweet eight-treasure tea. In Xining halal is the default rather than the exception, so you can walk into almost any street-corner restaurant. Dongguan Grand Mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Xiahe

Hui-run halal restaurants along the main street serve hand-pulled noodles, yak beef, mutton skewers and butter tea. Choices are fewer than Xining but the food is genuinely good and reliably halal. Xiahe Hui mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Fasting? Tell us and we run the route in Ramadan: suhoor boxes delivered before Fajr, slow afternoons, and iftar confirmed at a halal restaurant every single night.
Prayer

Where you pray on this route

Not a list of every mosque in the province — the ones we actually build into this itinerary, with wudhu and women’s space confirmed.

Dongguan Grand Mosque

Xining

Five minutes on foot from the hotels we book. Jumuah around 13:30 in winter and a little later in summer.

The easiest city on this entire site for salah. Mosques within walking distance of every hotel we use, and food stays available late through Ramadan nights.

Xiahe Hui mosque

Xiahe

Small, on the main street, and used by the Hui families who run the restaurants. Wudhu available.

Altitude is the real issue, not prayer. We build in a slow first afternoon, keep water in the vehicle, and plan the day so you are inside a town at prayer times.

On the road: your guide carries a prayer mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet calculated for your exact dates, and stops the vehicle rather than the prayer.
Getting there

Airports, stations and onward connections

Four hours by road from Lanzhou, five from Xining. Overland only; we pair it with Linxia or with a Xining return.

Timing

When to go

Xining

May to early October. July is greenest and busiest, September is cooler and quieter.

Xiahe

June to September. Winter is very cold and some grassland camps close.

May to early October is the comfortable window; late June to August is warmest at altitude and busiest at Qinghai Lake. Winter is dry and very cold but perfectly workable and much quieter, and the mosques are at their most peaceful.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask us every week

It is private. There is no seat-in-coach departure and no joining other travellers — the vehicle, the guide and the 6 days belong to your party alone. You pick the start date and we build around it. That is also why the halal logistics work: a kitchen booking for four people is a conversation, not a contract.
Every restaurant on this route is a certified halal kitchen with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. In Xining, Xiahe we use: Qinghai hand-grabbed mutton, beef lamian for breakfast, yak yoghurt and sweet eight-treasure tea; Hui-run halal restaurants along the main street serve hand-pulled noodles, yak beef, mutton skewers and butter tea. You receive the complete list with street addresses before you fly, and your guide re-confirms each booking the day before you eat there.
Dongguan Grand Mosque in Xining (Five minutes on foot from the hotels we book. Jumuah around 13:30 in winter and a little later in summer.); Xiahe Hui mosque in Xiahe (Small, on the main street, and used by the Hui families who run the restaurants. Wudhu available.). On the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time. Every vehicle carries a prayer mat, a compass and a sheet of prayer times calculated for your exact dates.
This is our gentlest pacing: short legs, one base at a time, and most days are a city day rather than a road day. Xining · Xiahe are spread over 6 days, so you are never in the vehicle long enough to lose a prayer.
Yes, and we do it often. Suhoor boxes are delivered to your hotel before Fajr, afternoons are kept slow, iftar is confirmed at a certified halal restaurant every night, and we find you a mosque for Taraweeh wherever you happen to be. If you want to spend the last ten nights or Eid in one city, tell us and we will re-cut the route around it.
International flights and Chinese visas are quoted separately. Travel insurance, personal shopping, optional activities outside the plan and tips are not included — and we do not add shopping stops to make up the difference. Everything listed under What is included is genuinely in the price.
