Overview

What the Zhenyuan Gorge Old Town is

Ming and Qing houses stacked up both banks of a gorge, with temples bolted onto the cliff face and a boat trip down a river that runs green between them. The best evening light in the province.

This is a private departure, not a shared coach. You choose the dates, we rebuild the 5 days around them: Zhenyuan, Guiyang, in that order, with the halal restaurants and the mosques placed first and the sightseeing fitted around them.

The halal guarantee on this route: every restaurant is a certified halal restaurant with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. We send the full list with addresses before you fly, and your guide re-checks each booking the day before you eat there. Guiyang Mosque is central and active, so prayer is easy in the capital. In the Miao and Dong village country, Muslim facilities are rare — we plan each village day around a known mosque or a confirmed prayer room, and your guide carries a prayer mat and arranges a private space where needed. We always pack a halal lunch on village days rather than rely on local kitchens.

Every city this route passes through

Each one with what you actually see there, what you eat, where you pray and how you arrive.

Zhenyuan (Guizhou)

1 full day · April to October. Summer evenings on the river are the best part of the year here.

An old town in a limestone gorge on the Wuyang river, with Ming and Qing houses stacked up both banks and a river that runs green between them. One of the most photogenic towns in Guizhou.

Wuyang river boat trip — An hour downstream through the gorge, past temples in the cliffs and fishing platforms. Evenings are the best light.
Qinglong cave — Temple buildings, halls and a Daoist shrine bolted onto a cliff face, with walkways connecting them a hundred feet above the river.
Old town lanes — Steep stone alleys of courtyard houses between the river and the ridge, quiet above the main street.
Hui-run halal restaurants in the county town serve beef rice noodles, sour fish soup made halal and grilled river fish. We pre-book, because the riverfront tourist menus are not halal.
Zhenyuan mosque — Small, serving the Hui community in the county. Jumuah may be small; your guide confirms timings.
High-speed rail from Guiyang in about 90 minutes, then a short transfer.

Guiyang (Guizhou)

1 full day · April to October. Guiyang is genuinely a summer refuge; July averages around 23C.

The capital of Guizhou and one of the coolest summer cities in China, with a Hui quarter around the old mosque and a food culture built on sour and spicy. Every Guizhou route passes through it.

Jiaxiu Tower and the Nanming river — A three-storey Ming tower on a rock in the river, with a long riverside park where the whole city walks in the evening.
Guiyang mosque — The Hui mosque in the old centre, active and central, with a halal restaurant street beside it.
Qianling mountain park — Forest park inside the city with macaque monkeys, a temple and a cable car. Cool under the trees even in August.
Guizhou halal is sour-spicy and very good: halal sour fish soup, beef rice noodles for breakfast, grilled beef, and a Muslim-run hotpot with a sour broth.
Guiyang mosque — Central and active, with wudhu. Jumuah is easy.
Guiyang Longdongbao (KWE) airport, high-speed rail from Guangzhou in about five hours.
Day by day

How the 5 days actually run

A working skeleton, not a fixed package. We rebuild it around your dates, your prayer needs and whoever is travelling with you.

1

Arrive in Zhenyuan

High-speed rail from Guiyang in about 90 minutes, then a short transfer. Your Muslim guide meets you at the gate with your name on a board. First stop is a hotel we have placed within walking distance of Zhenyuan mosque, so Maghrib is a short walk rather than a negotiation. Dinner is already booked at a halal kitchen we have audited.

2

Zhenyuan — Wuyang river boat trip

An hour downstream through the gorge, past temples in the cliffs and fishing platforms. Evenings are the best light.

3

Zhenyuan to Guiyang

Leave after Dhuhr and drive out. Guiyang Longdongbao (KWE) airport, high-speed rail from Guangzhou in about five hours. Your guide breaks the drive for salah and for food rather than at a service station of his choosing. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Guiyang mosque.

4

Guiyang — Jiaxiu Tower and the Nanming river

A three-storey Ming tower on a rock in the river, with a long riverside park where the whole city walks in the evening.

5

Depart from Guiyang

A last halal breakfast, then the transfer out. Guiyang Longdongbao (KWE) airport, high-speed rail from Guangzhou in about five hours. We hold the vehicle until your flight is called, and if you are fasting we send a breakfast box the night before.

Every day is salah-first. Zhenyuan, Guiyang each have mosques we have used before; on the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time rather than at a service station of his choosing.
Highlights

What makes this route worth the flight

Wuyang river boat trip

An hour downstream through the gorge, past temples in the cliffs and fishing platforms. Evenings are the best light.

Qinglong cave

Temple buildings, halls and a Daoist shrine bolted onto a cliff face, with walkways connecting them a hundred feet above the river.

Jiaxiu Tower and the Nanming river

A three-storey Ming tower on a rock in the river, with a long riverside park where the whole city walks in the evening.

Guiyang mosque

The Hui mosque in the old centre, active and central, with a halal restaurant street beside it.

Certified halal restaurants only, every single meal

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and the full list with addresses in your inbox before you fly.

Prayer planned into every day

Salah is placed first and sightseeing is built around it, not the other way round. Your guide carries a mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet.

Halal food

What you eat, city by city

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and no kitchen that handles both. This is the part we audit in person.

Zhenyuan

Hui-run halal restaurants in the county town serve beef rice noodles, sour fish soup made halal and grilled river fish. We pre-book, because the riverfront tourist menus are not halal. Zhenyuan mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Guiyang

Guizhou halal is sour-spicy and very good: halal sour fish soup, beef rice noodles for breakfast, grilled beef, and a Muslim-run hotpot with a sour broth. Guiyang mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Fasting? Tell us and we run the route in Ramadan: suhoor boxes delivered before Fajr, slow afternoons, and iftar confirmed at a halal restaurant every single night.
Prayer

Where you pray on this route

Not a list of every mosque in the province — the ones we actually build into this itinerary, with wudhu and women’s space confirmed.

Zhenyuan mosque

Zhenyuan

Small, serving the Hui community in the county. Jumuah may be small; your guide confirms timings.

A small mosque in the county town. We plan the gorge boat trip for the afternoon so prayer falls on land.

Guiyang mosque

Guiyang

Central and active, with wudhu. Jumuah is easy.

A central mosque and a Hui quarter make this the easiest city in Guizhou for prayer, which is why we base every route here.

On the road: your guide carries a prayer mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet calculated for your exact dates, and stops the vehicle rather than the prayer.
Getting there

Airports, stations and onward connections

Zhenyuan

High-speed rail from Guiyang in about 90 minutes, then a short transfer.

Guiyang

Guiyang Longdongbao (KWE) airport, high-speed rail from Guangzhou in about five hours.

Timing

When to go

Zhenyuan

April to October. Summer evenings on the river are the best part of the year here.

Guiyang

April to October. Guiyang is genuinely a summer refuge; July averages around 23C.

March to May and September to November are the best windows — mild, green and clear. Summer is cool by Chinese standards but wet, with heavy rain and occasional flooding on the mountain roads. Winter is grey and damp. The Miao and Dong festival calendar has major dates in spring and autumn, which we can build a trip around.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask us every week

It is private. There is no seat-in-coach departure and no joining other travellers — the vehicle, the guide and the 5 days belong to your party alone. You pick the start date and we build around it. That is also why the halal logistics work: a kitchen booking for four people is a conversation, not a contract.
Every restaurant on this route is a certified halal kitchen with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. In Zhenyuan, Guiyang we use: Hui-run halal restaurants in the county town serve beef rice noodles, sour fish soup made halal and grilled river fish; Guizhou halal is sour-spicy and very good: halal sour fish soup, beef rice noodles for breakfast, grilled beef, and a Muslim-run hotpot with a sour broth. You receive the complete list with street addresses before you fly, and your guide re-confirms each booking the day before you eat there.
Zhenyuan mosque in Zhenyuan (Small, serving the Hui community in the county. Jumuah may be small; your guide confirms timings.); Guiyang mosque in Guiyang (Central and active, with wudhu. Jumuah is easy.). On the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time. Every vehicle carries a prayer mat, a compass and a sheet of prayer times calculated for your exact dates.
This is our gentlest pacing: short legs, one base at a time, and most days are a city day rather than a road day. Zhenyuan · Guiyang are spread over 5 days, so you are never in the vehicle long enough to lose a prayer.
Yes, and we do it often. Suhoor boxes are delivered to your hotel before Fajr, afternoons are kept slow, iftar is confirmed at a certified halal restaurant every night, and we find you a mosque for Taraweeh wherever you happen to be. If you want to spend the last ten nights or Eid in one city, tell us and we will re-cut the route around it.
International flights and Chinese visas are quoted separately. Travel insurance, personal shopping, optional activities outside the plan and tips are not included — and we do not add shopping stops to make up the difference. Everything listed under What is included is genuinely in the price.
