Overview

What the Zhaoxing Dong Villages is

Five clans, five drum towers, five covered bridges, all built of interlocked pine without a single nail. The architecturally most remarkable village in Guizhou and much quieter than the better-known ones.

This is a private departure, not a shared coach. You choose the dates, we rebuild the 6 days around them: Zhaoxing, Kaili, in that order, with the halal restaurants and the mosques placed first and the sightseeing fitted around them.

The halal guarantee on this route: every restaurant is a certified halal restaurant with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. We send the full list with addresses before you fly, and your guide re-checks each booking the day before you eat there. Guiyang Mosque is central and active, so prayer is easy in the capital. In the Miao and Dong village country, Muslim facilities are rare — we plan each village day around a known mosque or a confirmed prayer room, and your guide carries a prayer mat and arranges a private space where needed. We always pack a halal lunch on village days rather than rely on local kitchens.

Cities

Every city this route passes through

Each one with what you actually see there, what you eat, where you pray and how you arrive.

Zhaoxing (Guizhou)

1 full day · May to October. Late September turns the terraces gold.

The Dong village of the drum towers: five clans, five towers, five bridges, in a valley of rice fields and wooden houses. Quieter than Xijiang and architecturally the most remarkable village in Guizhou.

The five drum towers — Each clan built its own multi-eaved tower of interlocked pine without a single nail. The tallest is thirteen storeys.
Wind and rain bridges — Covered bridges across the stream through the village, built the same way, with benches inside where people sit out the rain.
Terraced rice fields — The valley walls behind the village, green from June and gold in late September.
Dong village cooking arranged halal in advance: river fish, free-range chicken, sticky rice and mountain vegetables. We notify the household a day ahead; this is a real village, not a restaurant street.
Zhaoxing prayer arrangements — There is no mosque in the Dong village. We book a private room with floor space and your guide carries a mat and compass, or plan the village night between two Liping city prayer stops.
About five hours by road from Guiyang, or one hour from Liping station. Part of a southeast Guizhou loop.

Kaili (Guizhou)

2 full days · April to October. The Miao new year falls between October and December depending on the village.

The Miao and Dong heartland of southeast Guizhou. Terraced hillsides, silver jewellery, indigo-dyed cloth, and village festivals that are genuinely part of life rather than staged for visitors.

Xijiang Qianhu Miao village — Around a thousand stilt houses stacked up a valley, the largest Miao settlement in China. Stay overnight; the day visitors leave by five and the valley lights up.
Kaili Miao and Dong museum — A small, well-made museum of silverwork, embroidery and batik, worth an hour before you go into the villages.
Langde and the smaller villages — Quieter settlements within an hour of Kaili where the welcome is unhurried and nothing is ticketed.
Hui-run halal restaurants in Kaili city, plus Miao sour fish soup and cured meats prepared halal on request in the villages. We give the village kitchen 24 hours notice and confirm.
Kaili mosque — In the city. For the Xijiang overnight we book a guesthouse where salah is possible and your guide brings a mat.
High-speed rail from Guiyang in about 40 minutes.
Day by day

How the 6 days actually run

A working skeleton, not a fixed package. We rebuild it around your dates, your prayer needs and whoever is travelling with you.

1

Arrive in Zhaoxing

About five hours by road from Guiyang, or one hour from Liping station. Part of a southeast Guizhou loop. Your Muslim guide meets you at the gate with your name on a board. First stop is a hotel we have placed within walking distance of Zhaoxing prayer arrangements, so Maghrib is a short walk rather than a negotiation. Dinner is already booked at a halal kitchen we have audited.

2

Zhaoxing — The five drum towers

Each clan built its own multi-eaved tower of interlocked pine without a single nail. The tallest is thirteen storeys.

3

Zhaoxing to Kaili

Leave after Dhuhr and drive out. High-speed rail from Guiyang in about 40 minutes. Your guide breaks the drive for salah and for food rather than at a service station of his choosing. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Kaili mosque.

4

Kaili — Xijiang Qianhu Miao village

Around a thousand stilt houses stacked up a valley, the largest Miao settlement in China. Stay overnight; the day visitors leave by five and the valley lights up.

5

Kaili — Kaili Miao and Dong museum

A small, well-made museum of silverwork, embroidery and batik, worth an hour before you go into the villages.

6

Depart from Kaili

A last halal breakfast, then the transfer out. High-speed rail from Guiyang in about 40 minutes. We hold the vehicle until your flight is called, and if you are fasting we send a breakfast box the night before.

Every day is salah-first. Zhaoxing, Kaili each have mosques we have used before; on the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time rather than at a service station of his choosing.

Wind and rain bridges

Covered bridges across the stream through the village, built the same way, with benches inside where people sit out the rain.

Xijiang Qianhu Miao village

Around a thousand stilt houses stacked up a valley, the largest Miao settlement in China. Stay overnight; the day visitors leave by five and the valley lights up.

Kaili Miao and Dong museum

A small, well-made museum of silverwork, embroidery and batik, worth an hour before you go into the villages.

Certified halal restaurants only, every single meal

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and the full list with addresses in your inbox before you fly.

Prayer planned into every day

Salah is placed first and sightseeing is built around it, not the other way round. Your guide carries a mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet.

Halal food

What you eat, city by city

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and no kitchen that handles both. This is the part we audit in person.

Zhaoxing

Dong village cooking arranged halal in advance: river fish, free-range chicken, sticky rice and mountain vegetables. We notify the household a day ahead; this is a real village, not a restaurant street. Zhaoxing prayer arrangements is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Kaili

Hui-run halal restaurants in Kaili city, plus Miao sour fish soup and cured meats prepared halal on request in the villages. We give the village kitchen 24 hours notice and confirm. Kaili mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Fasting? Tell us and we run the route in Ramadan: suhoor boxes delivered before Fajr, slow afternoons, and iftar confirmed at a halal restaurant every single night.
Prayer

Where you pray on this route

Not a list of every mosque in the province — the ones we actually build into this itinerary, with wudhu and women’s space confirmed.

Zhaoxing prayer arrangements

Zhaoxing

There is no mosque in the Dong village. We book a private room with floor space and your guide carries a mat and compass, or plan the village night between two Liping city prayer stops.

We are honest about this one: no mosque in the village. Prayer is in a private room at the guesthouse, and we plan the stay so you are back in Liping or Kaili for Jumuah.

Kaili mosque

Kaili

In the city. For the Xijiang overnight we book a guesthouse where salah is possible and your guide brings a mat.

Pray in Kaili, then use a private room at the village guesthouse. Xijiang is built on a hillside, so we choose lodging with a usable floor space, not just a bed.

On the road: your guide carries a prayer mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet calculated for your exact dates, and stops the vehicle rather than the prayer.
Getting there

Airports, stations and onward connections

Zhaoxing

About five hours by road from Guiyang, or one hour from Liping station. Part of a southeast Guizhou loop.

Kaili

High-speed rail from Guiyang in about 40 minutes.

Timing

When to go

Zhaoxing

May to October. Late September turns the terraces gold.

Kaili

April to October. The Miao new year falls between October and December depending on the village.

March to May and September to November are the best windows — mild, green and clear. Summer is cool by Chinese standards but wet, with heavy rain and occasional flooding on the mountain roads. Winter is grey and damp. The Miao and Dong festival calendar has major dates in spring and autumn, which we can build a trip around.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask us every week

It is private. There is no seat-in-coach departure and no joining other travellers — the vehicle, the guide and the 6 days belong to your party alone. You pick the start date and we build around it. That is also why the halal logistics work: a kitchen booking for four people is a conversation, not a contract.
Every restaurant on this route is a certified halal kitchen with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. In Zhaoxing, Kaili we use: Dong village cooking arranged halal in advance: river fish, free-range chicken, sticky rice and mountain vegetables; Hui-run halal restaurants in Kaili city, plus Miao sour fish soup and cured meats prepared halal on request in the villages. You receive the complete list with street addresses before you fly, and your guide re-confirms each booking the day before you eat there.
Zhaoxing prayer arrangements in Zhaoxing (There is no mosque in the Dong village. We book a private room with floor space and your guide carries a mat and compass, or plan the village night between two Liping city prayer stops.); Kaili mosque in Kaili (In the city. For the Xijiang overnight we book a guesthouse where salah is possible and your guide brings a mat.). On the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time. Every vehicle carries a prayer mat, a compass and a sheet of prayer times calculated for your exact dates.
Expect one substantial drive between each base, usually timed to leave after Dhuhr, plus shorter local legs. Zhaoxing · Kaili over 6 days is a comfortable fit for most families.
Yes, and we do it often. Suhoor boxes are delivered to your hotel before Fajr, afternoons are kept slow, iftar is confirmed at a certified halal restaurant every night, and we find you a mosque for Taraweeh wherever you happen to be. If you want to spend the last ten nights or Eid in one city, tell us and we will re-cut the route around it.
International flights and Chinese visas are quoted separately. Travel insurance, personal shopping, optional activities outside the plan and tips are not included — and we do not add shopping stops to make up the difference. Everything listed under What is included is genuinely in the price.
