Overview

What the Inner Mongolia Family Grassland Camp is

Eight days with ger camps, camel rides, sand dunes and a night sky with no light pollution. Halal slaughter confirmed at every camp, no alcohol anywhere, and short drives with stock stops because children get bored on the steppe.

This is a private departure, not a shared coach. You choose the dates, we rebuild the 9 days around them: Hohhot, Xilingol grassland, Keshiketeng, Ordos, in that order, with the halal restaurants and the mosques placed first and the sightseeing fitted around them.

The halal guarantee on this route: every restaurant is a certified halal restaurant with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. We send the full list with addresses before you fly, and your guide re-checks each booking the day before you eat there. Hohhot's Great Mosque is active and central, and the surrounding quarter makes daily prayer and halal eating straightforward. On the grassland, camps are remote — we agree a fixed prayer space at the camp in advance and keep a prayer mat and clean water in the vehicle. We do not book camps that cannot confirm this.

Cities

Every city this route passes through

Each one with what you actually see there, what you eat, where you pray and how you arrive.

Hohhot (Inner Mongolia)

1 full day · June to September for the grassland. The city itself works all year.

The capital of Inner Mongolia and one of the most comfortable cities in China for a Muslim traveller. A Hui quarter around the Great Mosque, Mongol culture on the same streets, and grassland an hour north.

Hohhot Great Mosque — Founded in 1693, with a distinctive white-and-green complex and a minaret that has become the symbol of the Hui quarter. Wudhu on site and halal food on every side.
Inner Mongolia Museum — A good, quick introduction to Mongol history, the steppe empires and the grassland ecology before you drive north.
Xilitu Zhao and Dazhao temples — Two Tibetan Buddhist temple complexes in the old town, with silver-cast and painted halls. Visited as heritage.
Inner Mongolian Hui cooking is excellent and underrated: hand-grabbed mutton, milk tea, Mongol-style halal hotpot, beef buns, and a very good halal roast lamb. The Hui quarter alone has well over a hundred kitchens.
Hohhot Great Mosque — Central, historic and very active, with a large wudhu hall. Jumuah is easy and the surrounding streets are halal.
Hohhot Baita (HET) airport, high-speed rail from Beijing in about two and a half hours.

Xilingol grassland (Inner Mongolia)

1 full day · July and August for green grass and Naadam. Late September is gold and empty.

The classic Inner Mongolian steppe: grass to the horizon, herders on horseback, gers on the open plain and a sky that goes on forever. Four hours north of Hohhot.

Ulanqab and the summer pasture — Open rolling steppe with herds, gers and cavalry displays in July and August.
Naadam festival — Wrestling, horse racing and archery, held at different sites through July and August. Dates shift each year, so tell us your window and we will find the nearest one.
Gers and a night sky — Sleeping in a ger camp on the open steppe, with almost no light pollution and a horizon in every direction.
Mongol halal cooking done properly: hand-grabbed mutton, mutton kebabs, milk tea, dried cheese and fried rice. We confirm halal slaughter and no alcohol with the camp before you arrive.
Xilingol mosque — In Xilinhot city. On the steppe we plan prayer in the ger camp with a mat and compass, with Fajr and Maghrib outdoors on open ground.
Overland, about four hours north of Hohhot, or fly to Xilinhot.

Keshiketeng (Inner Mongolia)

1 full day · June to September. Late September turns the birch gold and is the best week of the year here.

A UNESCO-listed global geopark of granite peaks, birch forest, volcanic lakes and grassland, three hours north of the Beijing road. The most varied landscape in Inner Mongolia.

Huanggangliang forest — Birch and larch forest over granite, with a road that climbs through it and a viewpoint over the whole range.
Dalai Nur lake — A large soda lake on the steppe, with a bird reserve and one of the best sunsets in the region.
Asihatu stone forest — Granite pillars and ridges weathered into shapes, with a boardwalk through them and grassland all around.
Hui halal restaurants in the county town, plus Mongol halal cooking at the ger camps: hand-grabbed mutton, milk tea, dried beef and fried rice. We confirm halal with each camp.
Keshiketeng mosque — In the county town. In the park we plan prayer outdoors with a mat and compass.
Overland, about three hours from Chifeng or a long day from Beijing.

Ordos (Inner Mongolia)

1 full day · May to October. July and August are hot on the dunes, so we move to late afternoon.

A wealthy modern city on the Ordos plateau beside the Kubuqi desert, with the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan in the grassland south of it. Wide roads, big skies and very little traffic.

Mausoleum of Genghis Khan — A memorial complex on the steppe south of the city, with murals and a ceremonial hall. It is a memorial and a museum, not a tomb.
Kubuqi desert and Xiangshawan — Singing sand dunes an hour north, with camel rides, a desert train and a long sand slope to climb at sunset.
Kangbashi district — A vast new district of monumental architecture, worth an hour just to see how quiet it is.
Hui halal restaurants across Ordos city and Muslim-run kitchens at the desert park. Hand-grabbed mutton, mutton kebabs and halal hotpot. We pre-book the desert camp meals.
Ordos mosque — Central and active. At the desert we plan prayer at the camp or on clean sand with a mat.
Ordos Ejin Horo (DSN) airport, high-speed rail from Hohhot in about two hours.
Day by day

How the 9 days actually run

A working skeleton, not a fixed package. We rebuild it around your dates, your prayer needs and whoever is travelling with you.

1

Arrive in Hohhot

Hohhot Baita (HET) airport, high-speed rail from Beijing in about two and a half hours. Your Muslim guide meets you at the gate with your name on a board. First stop is a hotel we have placed within walking distance of Hohhot Great Mosque, so Maghrib is a short walk rather than a negotiation. Dinner is already booked at a halal kitchen we have audited.

2

Hohhot — Hohhot Great Mosque

Founded in 1693, with a distinctive white-and-green complex and a minaret that has become the symbol of the Hui quarter. Wudhu on site and halal food on every side.

3

Hohhot to Xilingol grassland

Leave after Dhuhr and drive out. Overland, about four hours north of Hohhot, or fly to Xilinhot. Your guide breaks the drive for salah and for food rather than at a service station of his choosing. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Xilingol mosque.

4

Xilingol grassland — Ulanqab and the summer pasture

Open rolling steppe with herds, gers and cavalry displays in July and August.

5

Xilingol grassland to Keshiketeng

Set off mid-morning, once the light is good. Overland, about three hours from Chifeng or a long day from Beijing. We stop for salah, and lunch is a halal kitchen we have booked on the route rather than whatever is nearest the motorway. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Keshiketeng mosque.

6

Keshiketeng — Huanggangliang forest

Birch and larch forest over granite, with a road that climbs through it and a viewpoint over the whole range.

7

Keshiketeng to Ordos

Depart after a late breakfast and a short walk. Ordos Ejin Horo (DSN) airport, high-speed rail from Hohhot in about two hours. The drive is broken twice: once for prayer, once for a proper halal meal, with water and a prayer mat in the vehicle. You arrive in time for Maghrib at Ordos mosque.

8

Ordos — Mausoleum of Genghis Khan

A memorial complex on the steppe south of the city, with murals and a ceremonial hall. It is a memorial and a museum, not a tomb.

9

Depart from Ordos

A last halal breakfast, then the transfer out. Ordos Ejin Horo (DSN) airport, high-speed rail from Hohhot in about two hours. We hold the vehicle until your flight is called, and if you are fasting we send a breakfast box the night before.

Every day is salah-first. Hohhot, Xilingol grassland, Keshiketeng, Ordos each have mosques we have used before; on the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time rather than at a service station of his choosing.

Halal food

What you eat, city by city

No pork on the premises, no alcohol on the premises, and no kitchen that handles both. This is the part we audit in person.

Hohhot

Inner Mongolian Hui cooking is excellent and underrated: hand-grabbed mutton, milk tea, Mongol-style halal hotpot, beef buns, and a very good halal roast lamb. The Hui quarter alone has well over a hundred kitchens. Hohhot Great Mosque is nearby, so you can pray and eat on the same street.

Keshiketeng

Fasting? Tell us and we run the route in Ramadan: suhoor boxes delivered before Fajr, slow afternoons, and iftar confirmed at a halal restaurant every single night.
Prayer

Where you pray on this route

Not a list of every mosque in the province — the ones we actually build into this itinerary, with wudhu and women’s space confirmed.

Hohhot Great Mosque

Hohhot

Central, historic and very active, with a large wudhu hall. Jumuah is easy and the surrounding streets are halal.

One of the best cities on this whole site for salah. A major historic mosque, a Hui quarter built around it, and hotels used to Muslim guests.

Xilingol mosque

Xilingol grassland

In Xilinhot city. On the steppe we plan prayer in the ger camp with a mat and compass, with Fajr and Maghrib outdoors on open ground.

Prayer on the open steppe is genuinely easy: clean ground, a mat and a compass, and no buildings to hide the horizon. The herder families are overwhelmingly Muslim or entirely unfazed by it.

Keshiketeng mosque

Keshiketeng

In the county town. In the park we plan prayer outdoors with a mat and compass.

Prayer in the county town before entering the park, then open ground with a mat and compass. The landscape is wide and clean, which makes it straightforward.

Ordos mosque

Ordos

Central and active. At the desert we plan prayer at the camp or on clean sand with a mat.

A city mosque plus clean open desert for the dune days. Your guide carries a mat, a compass and a printed prayer sheet.

On the road: your guide carries a prayer mat, a compass and a prayer-time sheet calculated for your exact dates, and stops the vehicle rather than the prayer.

June to September, and only June to September for the grassland — outside that window it is dry, brown and cold. July and August are the warmest and the busiest, with Naadam horse festivals in the middle of July. Winter is harsh and the grassland camps close, though Hohhot itself remains visitable.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask us every week

It is private. There is no seat-in-coach departure and no joining other travellers — the vehicle, the guide and the 9 days belong to your party alone. You pick the start date and we build around it. That is also why the halal logistics work: a kitchen booking for four people is a conversation, not a contract.
Every restaurant on this route is a certified halal kitchen with no pork and no alcohol on the premises. In Hohhot, Xilingol grassland, Keshiketeng, Ordos we use: Inner Mongolian Hui cooking is excellent and underrated: hand-grabbed mutton, milk tea, Mongol-style halal hotpot, beef buns, and a very good halal roast lamb; Mongol halal cooking done properly: hand-grabbed mutton, mutton kebabs, milk tea, dried cheese and fried rice; Hui halal restaurants in the county town, plus Mongol halal cooking at the ger camps: hand-grabbed mutton, milk tea, dried beef and fried rice; Hui halal restaurants across Ordos city and Muslim-run kitchens at the desert park. You receive the complete list with street addresses before you fly, and your guide re-confirms each booking the day before you eat there.
Hohhot Great Mosque in Hohhot (Central, historic and very active, with a large wudhu hall. Jumuah is easy and the surrounding streets are halal.); Xilingol mosque in Xilingol grassland (In Xilinhot city. On the steppe we plan prayer in the ger camp with a mat and compass, with Fajr and Maghrib outdoors on open ground.); Keshiketeng mosque in Keshiketeng (In the county town. In the park we plan prayer outdoors with a mat and compass.); Ordos mosque in Ordos (Central and active. At the desert we plan prayer at the camp or on clean sand with a mat.). On the driving legs your guide breaks the journey at prayer time. Every vehicle carries a prayer mat, a compass and a sheet of prayer times calculated for your exact dates.
This is our gentlest pacing: short legs, one base at a time, and most days are a city day rather than a road day. Hohhot · Xilingol grassland · Keshiketeng · Ordos are spread over 9 days, so you are never in the vehicle long enough to lose a prayer.
Yes, and we do it often. Suhoor boxes are delivered to your hotel before Fajr, afternoons are kept slow, iftar is confirmed at a certified halal restaurant every night, and we find you a mosque for Taraweeh wherever you happen to be. If you want to spend the last ten nights or Eid in one city, tell us and we will re-cut the route around it.
International flights and Chinese visas are quoted separately. Travel insurance, personal shopping, optional activities outside the plan and tips are not included — and we do not add shopping stops to make up the difference. Everything listed under What is included is genuinely in the price.
