Follow the old caravan road: halal Lanzhou lamian for breakfast, the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang, singing sand dunes and desert sunsets timed around Maghrib. The Gansu corridor is a thousand kilometres of desert, wall, monastery and mosque, and it is the single best road trip in China if you like emptiness.

Every town on the Gansu corridor has working mosques, and Lanzhou is one of China's great halal cities. The long desert drives are the only challenge — we plan fuel and food stops around Dhuhr and Asr, carry water for wudu, and time the dune sunset so Maghrib lands on time.
May, June, September and October. July and August are very hot in the desert; winter is cold, empty and spectacular if you dress for it.
Send us your dates and who is travelling. A Muslim advisor replies within one hour during China working hours with a day-by-day halal plan for this route — restaurants, mosques, prayer times, hotels and an itemised price.
